In the wake of a disheartening 22-38 loss to the Wallabies at Ellis Park, we dissect the performances of the Springboks in their Rugby Championship opener under Rassie Erasmus. The match was a tale of two halves, with the Bomb Squad’s collapse marking a sharp downturn after what began as a promising contest.

Starting with the backs, Aphelele Fassi showed early brilliance, setting up Edwill van der Merwe for a try with his deft handling. However, his overall game was marred by defensive lapses and inconsistent kicking, earning him a middling score. Van der Merwe, too, had moments of defensive prowess but faded as the match progressed, also scoring moderately.

Jesse Kriel struggled defensively, often caught out of position, and despite some offensive flashes, it wasn't enough to turn the tide, reflecting in his below-average rating. Centre partner Andre Esterhuizen powered through for his first Springboks try and showcased solid passing, though a critical error post-line break proved costly.

On the wing, Kurt-Lee Arendse made an immediate impact with an early try and reliable high-ball handling, but like Van der Merwe, couldn't stem the Wallabies' attacks as the game unfolded. Fly-half Manie Libbok's promising start was overshadowed by a costly interception and defensive gaps, contributing to his low score.

Scrum-half Grant Williams managed a commendable performance with precise kicking and quick passing that initially set the stage for a potential victory.

"Springboks' mindset has changed, we want to win everything and be the best all the time,"

declared Siya Kolisi, who led by example with a daring try and solid defensive work, despite an injury scare.

The forwards had mixed fortunes. Pieter-Steph du Toit and Marco van Staden were relentless, particularly at the breakdown, though the latter saw little reward for his efforts. Lood de Jager and Eben Etzebeth excelled in lineouts and general play, with Etzebeth standing out as one of the few to maintain intensity throughout the match. Wilco Louw and Ox Nche dominated their scrummaging battles, reflecting their higher ratings.

The replacement players, collectively known as the Bomb Squad, largely faltered, with inaccuracies in lineouts from Bongi Mbonambi, penalties conceded by Kwagga Smith, and missed tackles by Canan Moodie, leading to a scoreless second half for the team and ultimately sealing their fate in this opening clash.
