In the high-stakes world of schoolboy rugby, Stellenberg High School has become the tale everyone's talking about. With an impressive scorecard of 11 wins in their first 12 games, including victories over giants like Paarl Gim, Grey College, and Paul Roos, their ascent to the top is nothing short of spectacular. Up next, they face a daunting challenge against Paarl Boys' High (Boishaai) in what's expected to be a thrilling encounter on Brug Street this coming Saturday.
Paarl Boys’ High coach Sean Erasmus is full of praise for Stellenberg's meteoric rise. "Schoolboy rugby has become a lot more professional,” he remarked, highlighting the evolution in how teams prepare. “The amount of time and effort that goes into preparing the boys has changed a great deal.” At the core of Stellenberg's success, Erasmus points to their leadership, particularly noting the contributions of head of sport Andras Molnar and coach Divan Batt.
"Stellenberg have done that really well. Andras, Divan Batt and others in that system have put a great deal of thought into their structures, and how they’ve wanted to put Stellenberg on the map,"
Erasmus added, “They’ve been putting in the hard yards over the years.”
This season has been a rollercoaster for Boishaai, marked by inconsistency, but Erasmus remains optimistic about his young team’s growth. Drawing parallels between this season and their 2024 campaign, he shared, “There have been some improvements since the start of the season, and I’ve also been impressed by the character the team has shown.” It's clear that as much as Stellenberg has been in the spotlight, Boishaai is not a team to write off just yet.
As Stellenberg prepares for the upcoming game, all eyes will be on whether they can maintain their formidable form against the historically strong Boishaai. This match isn't just a test of skill but a showdown of strategy, preparation, and heart, qualities that both teams have demonstrated abundantly this season.
