Stick: Scotland Bigger Threat Than England

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick has indicated that Scotland will be a more formidable opponent than England. He highlighted Scotland's recent victory over Argentina and the long-term cohesion of their key players as significant factors. "I think they will be a better team, in the sense of where they are," Stick commented, reflecting on Scotland's performance and teamwork.

Stick recalled that previous encounters with Scotland were always closely contested, at least for the first 60 minutes, despite what the final scores might suggest. "Even the games we've played against them before, the first 60 minutes are always tight. Sometimes if you look at the full-time score, it looks like it was an easy game for us. No, we had to make sure we performed well against them," he explained.

The assistant coach specifically praised the synergy in Scotland's team, especially noting Finn Russell's nearing milestone of 100 Test caps, which complements well-established partnerships at scrumhalf and centre.

"I think they will be a better and a tougher team, a bigger challenge [than England, who the Boks beat at Ellis Park last week]."

Stick's insights into Scotland's playing style are enriched by his personal experiences with Scotland's head coach, Gregor Townsend, during their time at the Sharks. This connection gives Stick a unique perspective on the attacking, expansive style Townsend has instilled in the Scottish squad. Stick admires this approach, describing it as a preference for "beautiful rugby," which emphasizes moving the ball to the wider channels over a forward-dominated game.

Turning to Rassie Erasmus, the Bok head coach set to lead his 55th Test match, Stick shared high praise for Erasmus's tactical acumen and humble leadership style. "He's got brains, he works hard and he understands what he wants to achieve," said Stick.

"One thing I enjoy is that Rassie is not scared to be wrong. If Pieter-Steph [du Toit] says something is the best plan for the team, he‘ll go with it. He doesn‘t have ego."

As Erasmus approaches a significant coaching milestone, Stick expressed the team's commitment to delivering a strong performance against Scotland. He anticipates that this match will be South Africa's most challenging test of the season, reflecting the respect and preparation they are putting into this encounter.

With the Nations Championship progressing, attention turns to how these strategic insights and team dynamics translate on the field, as the Springboks face a Scotland team that continues to defy expectations under Townsend's leadership.
