The Stormers didn't just beat Cardiff in the Vodacom URC quarter-final at Cape Town Stadium; they survived a trial by fire to clinch a 44-21 victory. Leading 21-7 at halftime, the home squad was tested but ultimately stretched their legs to secure a semi-final berth against either Leinster or the Lions.

The match kicked off with both teams locked in a fierce tussle until a dominant Stormers scrum shifted the momentum. Despite a relentless assault in Cardiff's 22, a botched pass allowed Jacob Beetham to intercept and set up Cam Winnett for a sprint to the try line. Not to be outdone, the Stormers responded swiftly. André-Hugo Venter bulldozed his way over the line following a textbook penalty-lineout-maul sequence.

As penalties began to pile up for Cardiff, Stormers' Ntuthuko Mchunu found a gap and charged over the line. The situation worsened for Cardiff when Keiron Assiratti received a yellow card after another scrum penalty. Stormers' fullback Damian Willemse then masterminded a brilliant play, passing to Leolin Zas who shrugged off a tackle to score.

"Damian Willemse and Leolin Zas cook up a banger!"

Cardiff's resolve stiffened in the second half, with No 8 Taine Basham clawing back a try from a 5m scrum. However, Stormers' Seabelo Senatla intercepted a cross-kick soon after, leading to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu limping off after scoring, ankle injured in the process.

Despite Cardiff's tenacity, with James Botham narrowing the scoreline, repeated infractions led to Javan Sebastian also receiving a yellow card, reducing Cardiff to uncontested scrums. The Stormers capitalized, with Paul de Villiers and later JJ Kotze sealing the game with tries. Replacement flyhalf Jurie Matthee contributed further with two successful penalties.

The Stormers' ability to capitalize on Cardiff's mistakes and their tactical use of the maul were central to their strategy. As they march into the semi-finals, their blend of brute force and strategic play remains their biggest asset.

Stormers Tries: André-Hugo Venter, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Leolin Zas, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Paul de Villiers, JJ Kotze; Conversions: Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (3), Jurie Matthee; Penalties: Jurie Matthee (2).

Cardiff Tries: Cam Winnett, Taine Basham, James Botham; Conversions: Ioan Lloyd (3).
