Lleyton Davids, wearing jersey number 11, showcased remarkable speed and agility, contributing significantly with a try. Dobson highlighted an instance that could have led to another score for Davids:
"If Louw Nel had drawn the opposing defender in, he [Davids] scores another one."
Dobson further praised Davids for his unexpected performance level:
"I thought he overachieved … that sounds like he’s redlining – he was better than I thought he was going to be. I think there’s something really there."
In addition to Davids, fullback Dylan Miller, also stood out by scoring two tries and demonstrating his robust defensive skills, which Dobson described as fearless:
"He’s so tough, he’s absolutely fearless. How was that tackle on [centre] Stravino Jacobs? I think he’s special."
Among the younger talents, Olly Reid contributed decisively to a penalty try against a solid Bulls pack. Meanwhile, the historically youngest Stormer, Markus Muller, exhibited a commendable work ethic in both defense and attack, hinting at a bright future:
"We expect a schoolboy star like Markus is going to be like Danie Gerber and run through everybody, but it’s different stuff - it’s decision-making, physicality, work rate … He’s extraordinary."
Despite the loss, Dobson expressed positivity about the depth and potential of his team, especially while key players are on national duty. The performance of new talents suggests that the Stormers can look forward to a robust roster in the upcoming season.
With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, the Stormers are navigating their pre-season challenges with a focus on building a competitive team for the main league games. The integration of young players like Muller and Reid into the line-up alongside experienced players indicates a strategic blend of youth and maturity as the team prepares for more rigorous competitions ahead.
Dobson’s optimism is a beacon for the Stormers as they refine their strategies and player dynamics, aiming for a successful season that leverages both the raw talent and experienced heads within the squad.
