The Stormers' crushing 44-21 victory over Cardiff in the Vodacom URC quarter-final was tainted by a string of injuries that could destabilize their campaign. Star flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is on crutches following an ankle injury sustained while scoring a try, casting a shadow over their semi-final preparations.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu, a pivotal figure in the Stormers' lineup, was visibly in pain after the match, hobbling with the aid of crutches. "It looks pretty serious, to be honest," Coach John Dobson revealed, emphasizing the gravity of the injury. "He's obviously going for a scan. The doctors have given me some feedback, but it looks like a proper ankle injury."
"He was cramping a bit before then and looked uncomfortable when he started running back. We haven’t confirmed anything yet, but it’s concerning."
Adding to the Stormers' woes, wing Seabelo Senatla will miss the upcoming semi-final due to a concussion sustained during the game, just as he was making a notable return. "He was HIA category one. He was knocked out, so he won’t play next week," Dobson stated, acknowledging the severe impact of Senatla's absence. "I thought he was absolutely magnificent. For a guy who has been out for so long, his work in the air, his defence and his work rate were outstanding. That’s a hell of a blow for us."
"It’s a big blow," Dobson added. "But whenever we take a knock, this group tends to pull together and fight."
The team's resilience will be thoroughly tested as they face either Leinster or the Lions in the semi-finals next weekend. Despite the setbacks, Dobson remains optimistic, buoyed by the squad's depth and spirit. "We’ve lost probably the most in-form young player in world rugby the week before a semi-final, which is far from ideal. But the way Jurie Matthee is playing and the fight in this squad gives me confidence that we’ll find a way," he concluded.
With significant hurdles ahead, the Stormers are gearing up for a challenging semi-final, where their adaptability and team spirit will be crucial in overcoming the loss of key players.
