Following a challenging United Rugby Championship (URC) encounter that saw the Stormers succumb to a 22-16 defeat against Cardiff, John Dobson, the director of rugby for the Stormers, expressed his disappointment. The match, dominated by Cardiff, ended with the Welsh team securing a play-offs spot by finishing sixth in the standings, thanks to a bonus point for scoring four tries to one. This sets the stage for a compelling quarter-final rematch in Cape Town, where the third-placed Stormers will host Cardiff. Coming off an overseas tour without a single win, including a draw against Ulster, the pressure is palpable but Dobson remains confident in his team’s resilience.

Dobson's reflections on the match were tinged with both respect for the opposition and a candid acknowledgment of his team's shortcomings. "We are going to have to regroup. It’s our first overseas URC loss this year, and a very disappointing one at the wrong time," he admitted. Despite the setback, he is optimistic about the upcoming quarter-final, "We have no serious injury concerns. We are just a very bruised team beaten by the better team on the night. We are hopefully going to be much better than this in the quarter-final."

"We are going to have to regroup quickly. We know what’s in this group and we will regroup quickly."

The match against Cardiff highlighted several persistent issues for the Stormers, similar to those observed in their previous game against Ulster. Dobson was forthright about the need for improvement. "That was a very disappointing performance. We have to give Cardiff a lot of credit, they were desperate," he said. His disappointment was palpable as he reflected on the implications of the loss, "I am sorry that their desperation meant more to them than our chance to host more playoffs in Cape Town."

Dobson praised Cardiff's tactical execution, noting, "I thought their defence was brilliant. Their attack was very good and put us under pressure defensively, and they were very clever." However, he also pointed out the missed opportunities by his team, "We had many areas of dominance and a lot of opportunities that we wasted, so it was similar to last week. Our failure to convert when we are five meters out was disappointing and the fact we didn’t have a behaviour change there is a problem for us."

As the Stormers prepare for the rematch, the focus is clear: to address these critical lapses and to harness the collective strength and strategy that have defined their play at home. The upcoming quarter-final in Cape Town not only offers a chance for redemption but also an opportunity to demonstrate the resilience and tactical acumen that are hallmarks of a championship-caliber team.
