Super Rugby at 30: Losers Advance in Playoffs

As Super Rugby gears up to blow out 30 candles in 2026, there's a bit of a facelift coming for its finals series along with an action-packed schedule featuring 77 games. The fun begins on February 13, with the reigning champs, the Crusaders, squaring off against the Highlanders in what promises to be a sizzling opener in Dunedin.

Despite sticking to a six-team finals format, the powers that be have decided to give the "lucky loser" rule a twist. Previously, the highest-ranked loser in the quarter-finals got bumped down a peg in the seedings. Now, they'll cruise through to the fourth seed position automatically, bagging an away ticket in their quest for glory. This closes the bizarre loophole that once allowed the Chiefs a home semi-final berth despite a playoff defeat last season.

"Thirty years on from the first season, the competition continues to deliver what makes it special. World-class players, high-octane rugby and a connection to communities right across the Pacific."

Each of the 11 clubs is set to duke it out over 14 games in a 16-round regular season. The revised finals structure aims to balance fairness with the undying spirit of competition. Fans can also look forward to the return of the Super Round, turning Christchurch into rugby central from April 24–26. The event will mark the grand debut of the spanking new One New Zealand Stadium, stepping in for the venerable old Lancaster Park.

So, which clash has fans buzzing the most? That remains to be seen, but with 30 seasons under its belt, Super Rugby Pacific's 2026 lineup promises to keep the adrenaline pumping and the stands packed. Ready for another round of high-flying tackles and heart-stopping tries? Because Super Rugby sure is.

Teams to watch: Crusaders, Highlanders, Chiefs, and the other eight clubs, each bringing their A-game to the thrilling 16-round melee.
