It's been over three decades since the 1995 World Cup final, but former All Blacks coach Laurie Mains can't shake off the memories of that fateful game. In a recent tell-all on Dom Harvey’s podcast, Mains reiterated his belief that his team was sabotaged, claiming food poisoning and a controversial call denied New Zealand the title.
According to Mains, the drama began two days before the final when several players fell violently ill, a situation he directly attributes to a suspicious waitress at their Johannesburg hotel. "When we came back from dinner on the Thursday night, Zinzan Brooke was standing at reception,” Mains recalled. “Half the team were up in the doc’s room vomiting and sick as hell. I canceled the captain’s run on Friday because they couldn’t concentrate." Witnessing his team struggle on the field, Mains described it as the worst moment in his coaching career, knowing they were not at their full strength.
The mysterious waitress, later nicknamed “Suzie,” allegedly spiked the players' tea and coffee. Mains said,
“A private detective found she was hired on the Wednesday, served that batch of tea and coffee on Thursday, and disappeared completely. Staff were convinced she’d done it.”
Mains suspects the sabotage was orchestrated by UK bookmakers. The infamous final saw the Springboks edge out the All Blacks 15-12 after extra time, a match marred not only by the poisoning claim but also by a contentious referee decision. Mains is still salty about a disallowed try by Jonah Lomu. “I’ll still maintain that Jonah would have scored a try when he got pulled back for a forward pass. It wasn’t a forward pass. When you study it on TV, it certainly wouldn’t have been called back today,” he argued.
While many have dismissed Mains' poisoning theory as a desperate excuse, he stands firm.
“When you see Craig Dowd and Jeff Wilson vomiting on the side of the field, it’s only someone like Keith Quinn that would say the story was made up – I found that unbelievable,”
he stated. Mains believes that had the All Blacks won under those dire circumstances, it would have been one of the greatest sporting achievements ever. The enduring controversy of the 1995 World Cup final continues to provoke debate and speculation, with Mains leading the charge, undeterred in his quest for what he believes is the truth behind that loss.
