The Springboks have swiftly snagged the first move in the rugby chess game, and Scotland's coach Gregor Townsend isn't mincing words about Boan Venter's leap into the Test arena. Venter, who made the move to Edinburgh from the Cheetahs back in 2021, was on the brink of qualifying for Scotland through residency just in time for the 2026 Six Nations. But his selection for the Boks' face-off against Georgia at Mbombela Stadium this Saturday has slammed the door shut on any lingering guesses about his national loyalty.
At 28, Venter has bulldozed his way into Rassie Erasmus’ Boks squad, turning heads with his explosive performances in the Vodacom URC. Chatting up with Scotland Rugby News, Townsend couldn't help but gush over Venter, spotlighting him as a beacon of consistency in an Edinburgh squad that's been a bit lost in the sauce.
"I think he’s been one of the best players in the URC the last two or three years. This year was probably his best season – whether it’s the set-piece or his ball-carrying, he’s really impressed. We wish him all the best. He’s now embarking on an international career and it shows the quality of the player he is."
When prodded about any sour grapes over losing Venter as a potential kilt-wearing warrior, Townsend kept it cool as a cucumber. "It’s really hypothetical," he stated. "He wasn’t going to be available for a few months … and it’s hypothetical until it happens — and it’s not going to happen now."
So, as the Boks gear up to bring the thunder against Georgia, one thing's crystal clear: Boan Venter is ready to stir up a storm in green and gold. Meanwhile, Scotland will be watching, perhaps with a wee bit of 'what could have been', as one of the formidable looseheads charges onto the Test stage, leaving behind what might have been a tartan future.
