Tragic Passing of Young Rugby Star Bibo Makwedini

In a tragic turn of events, Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini, a former South African U18 prop and a rising rugby talent, has passed away at the young age of 20. Makwedini suffered a cardiac arrest during a training session with his French Pro D2 club, Béziers, at Stade de la Gayonne last Friday. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he died a few hours later. Makwedini, an alumnus of Wynberg Boys’ High, had joined the Béziers academy in anticipation of the 2025-26 season and was tipped to join the senior squad soon.

Bobo Skinstad, the club president and former Springbok captain, expressed his grief over the young player's sudden demise.

"It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the tragic passing of our young player, Luqobo (Bibo) Makwedini, at the age of 20,"

Skinstad stated. He praised Makwedini's quick integration and impact within the team, highlighting his commitment and personal qualities that made him a beloved member of the Red and Blue family.

The entire club and its community are reeling from this loss.

"Today, the entire Red and Blue family is united in mourning and deeply shaken by this heartbreaking loss,”

Skinstad added. He extended the club’s deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Makwedini’s family, loved ones, and teammates, acknowledging the profound impact he had on all who knew him.

In this difficult time, Skinstad reiterated the club's commitment to supporting the bereaved family and teammates. "During this time of immense sorrow, AS Béziers Hérault stands with his loved ones and offers them its full support," he remarked, requesting privacy for those grieving.

The rugby community has lost a young and promising talent whose potential was just beginning to unfold. Makwedini's passing is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the need to cherish every moment. The club has not announced any further details regarding memorial services, but it is clear that Luqobo “Bibo” Makwedini will be deeply missed both on and off the field.
