Tuipulotu: All Blacks vs Springboks Feels Like Final
Despite shrugging off the underdog label, Patrick Tuipulotu is acutely aware of the challenge the All Blacks face when they meet the Springboks at Ellis Park this Saturday. With 57 caps and leadership experience from the All Blacks’ recent tour, where they secured wins against local club teams, Tuipulotu is gearing up for a significant test in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

Addressing the media, Tuipulotu emphasized the shift in intensity expected at the international level compared to club games.

"The obvious thing is having a real reality check around what we’re coming up against. Our coaches have been good in acknowledging that we’ve had three games against club sides here, but the Test match now awaits us. There’s a different intensity that comes with that."

The veteran lock, aged 33, firmly dismissed the notion of the All Blacks being underdogs, instead highlighting the stakes of the upcoming match.

"No, it doesn’t feel like we’re underdogs. It does feel like the two best teams are going head to head at the moment and trying to fight for that No 1 spot. World Cups aside, this feels like a final for us."

Tuipulotu is also excited about the prospect of facing formidable opponents such as Eben Etzebeth. "You want to test yourself against the best. The Springbok pack is pretty renowned, so excited and looking forward to that challenge," he stated, indicating his readiness to confront one of the toughest forwards in international rugby.

The All Blacks have shown progressive improvements over their past three matches, playing against teams like the Stormers, Sharks, and Vodacom Bulls. Tuipulotu noted that the entire squad is now finely tuned into the game plan. “Having all 43 or 44 of us across the game plan and how we want to play has been big for us. There’s been some steady improvement,” he added, acknowledging the development across the team.

As the series kicks off, the focus is paramount, with Tuipulotu pointing out the importance of discipline and mental toughness, especially in the closing stages of a game. “It’s around discipline. You could be pinned down in the corner trying to stop them from getting a winning try. A lot of those come down to mental decisions in the last few minutes, when the game’s on the line. But certainly, around set-piece, being physical, intensity, and staying on for 80-plus minutes,” he detailed, underlining the key aspects required to overcome the Springboks.

The clash at Ellis Park not only promises to be a battle of titans but also a tactical showdown with much at stake, featuring two of the world’s rugby powerhouses. It’s more than just a test; it’s a mini-final, with each team looking to assert their dominance early in the rivalry series.
