Western Province winger Shilton van Wyk is adamant that his team is on the brink of delivering a full, solid game as they seek their elusive first victory of the Currie Cup campaign this weekend in Bloemfontein. Despite being at the base of the leaderboard with nada in the points column after three matches, Van Wyk's confidence in the squad’s growth is palpable as they prepare to face a blisteringly in-form Cheetahs team.

Despite their precarious position, Van Wyk is seeing positive signs, especially during training sessions.

"We’re starting to gel together nicely in training and finding each other. We just need to bring that into the game. It’s getting closer to the point where we play as a team, as a unit."

This comes from a player who knows a thing or two about scoring, having made his mark in the Sevens world before returning to the 15-man format.

Van Wyk, who is no stranger to the try line, will grace the right wing at the Toyota Stadium, a shift from his initial fullback position in the first two games. Reflecting on his return to the traditional format after a six-year hiatus, he commented, "It’s lekker to play 15s again. But the adjustment to 15s has been difficult due to the lack of space and more defenders to beat. Having said that, I’m enjoying playing 15s again after six years. The pitches up north are typically faster, so it’s good for backs like me to be put into space."

Backline coach Dewaldt Duvenage has been impressed with Van Wyk's contributions and adaptability. While Van Wyk is set to rejoin the Blitzboks post-tournament, Duvenage hinted that his future might still intertwine with Western Province's long-term vision.

The stakes are high and the pressure is mounting for WP as they aim to dodge the ignominious wooden spoon. With a player like Van Wyk in their ranks, and the growing synergy among the team, Western Province supporters have reasons to hold onto hope as the season progresses.
