Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus is shaking things up with his latest squad selection for the Rugby Championship, signaling a pivot towards youth as the team builds towards the 2027 World Cup. Rugby stalwart Victor Matfield has weighed in, noting some particularly bold choices that could hint at the future of South African rugby.

Among the notable exclusions from the 37-man squad are 2019 World Cup heroes Makazole Mapimpi and Lukhanyo Am, a duo integral to securing the Boks’ third World Cup title. Their omission is not just a tweak to the roster but a loud proclamation of a new era, as both are now relegated to a standby role. Matfield expressed his intrigue over these decisions, especially considering the standout performances of certain players in recent seasons.

"The biggest one is probably Thomas du Toit. He was probably the best tighthead prop in the northern hemisphere during the club season, but he hasn’t given him an opportunity at tighthead, just at loosehead, so that’s really interesting,"

Matfield remarked on the Rivals podcast. He highlighted the strategic depth Erasmus is cultivating, particularly in the forward pack, despite some stars being side-lined.

The squad's composition reflects a broader strategy to usher in fresh talent, with a few seasoned players like Faf de Klerk also missing the cut. De Klerk, despite a strong showing in recent matches, finds himself edged out by the likes of Cobus Reinach, who has made a significant impact since his return to South African shores.

"Faf played brilliantly when he came on, he had a big impact but, with Cobus being there last year, coming back to South Africa to play in South Africa [for the Stormers], he probably just got the nod."

Matfield pointed out, underscoring the tough decisions facing Erasmus as he navigates the balance between experience and emerging talent.

This strategy suggests that Erasmus is not only planning for the immediate challenges of the Rugby Championship but is also keenly eyeing the future, particularly the 2027 World Cup. The exclusion of World Cup winners and the inclusion of newer, albeit less experienced, players indicate a significant shift in the team dynamics and a bold step towards a new chapter in Springboks rugby. As the season progresses, it will be telling to see how these decisions unfold on the international stage.
