Wales Coach Shakes Up Team for Bok Showdown

Steve Tandy, the Wales coach, is gearing up to alter his team composition for the upcoming match against the Springboks this Saturday. Former Wales captain Sam Warburton highlighted that only five of the players have secured their positions for the crucial test. The team's recent 35-21 defeat to Argentina has set the stage for a challenging fixture in the Nations Championship at Kings Park.

Tandy disclosed his plans post-match in San Juan, stating, "Everyone might not get a chance but we’ll definitely make some changes from the game." He elaborated on the demands of the upcoming game, noting the extensive travel and physicality involved. "We’ll assess everyone and see how they pull up and make a decision tomorrow evening on the team."

Even before the setback against Los Pumas, Warburton identified Dewi Lake, Jac Morgan, Aaron Wainwright, Tomos Williams, and Eddie James as the quintet who have locked in their starting roles. During an ITV interview, Warburton commented on the competitive atmosphere within the squad.

"We should celebrate this, that we can have a debate over who starts,"

he noted, specifically pointing out the ongoing competition for the No 6 jersey between Alex Mann and James Botham.

Despite the disappointing result in Argentina, Tandy remains optimistic about Wales' trajectory in the Nations Championship, citing their prior victory over Fiji. He reflected,

"We had a great result [against Fiji] and again we would like more from our performance but I think that’s the expectation we have as a group going forward,"

and admitted, "There’s disappointment but going to the world champions we know they can probably put two or three teams out that are really impressive."

The physical dominance displayed by Argentina was a key takeaway for Tandy. "Argentina probably dominated the physicality piece early doors so that’s something we definitely need to have a look at going forward," he analyzed, pinpointing an area for potential improvement as they prepare to face the formidable Springboks.

The confirmed starters for Wales are: 1. Hooker: Dewi Lake 2. Flanker: Jac Morgan 3. Flanker: Aaron Wainwright 4. Scrumhalf: Tomos Williams 5. Centre: Eddie James

As Wales looks forward to the confrontation with South Africa, the adjustments made by Tandy could be pivotal in their performance at Kings Park. The upcoming test not only offers a redemption opportunity after their defeat in Argentina but also a chance to gauge their preparations against a top-tier opponent ahead of more challenging fixtures.
