Harry Wilson is gearing up for a challenging encounter against the Springboks this Sunday in Perth. The Wallabies’ captain is acutely aware that his team needs to disrupt the South Africans' momentum to stand a chance. Wilson is confident, however, about the Australian team’s ability to penetrate the formidable Boks’ defense, while also acknowledging the necessity of matching their physicality in the game’s crucial confrontations.
"Yeah, they’ve obviously played some really good footy over the last month, but I guess we had a bit of success against them last year where we moved the ball around and backed ourselves,"
Wilson also emphasized the importance of the forward pack's performance, highlighting the need to counter South Africa’s strengths from the get-go.
"I guess in the forward pack, you’ve got to try to stop them up front too. We know if we let them get a roll, it’s going to be a tough day for us. So hopefully we move the ball around and step up in the forwards."
The Wallabies are not just focusing on their defensive strategy but are also looking to enhance their offensive plays under the guidance of Les Kiss, the team’s current coach, who has previously worked with Wilson at the Reds.
"Yeah, no, he’s been really good. Same as what he is at the Reds. He’s such a character and the boys love him," Wilson remarked about Kiss. "He’s just, I guess, a very lovable character when he’s on the grass. He’s serious, he’s switched on and he loves his attack. He’s really tried to bring a little bit more to our attack and trying to make us really expand there and, I guess, back ourselves."
Wilson also pointed out what the Wallabies learned from the Springboks’ recent 3-1 series victory over the All Blacks in one of rugby’s most intense fixtures.
"As a forward, the set-piece battle’s massive. They’ve obviously had a really good scrum which dominated the All Blacks and their maul was really threatening too. So we know we’ve got to do a really good job there," he explained. "And then around the field, they’re obviously physical and love putting the ball up to their wingers to try and get the ball back. So we understand the aerial threat they have, but then also their big forwards getting around the corner, trying to get on the front foot."
