Wallabies' Penalty Woes Risk Championship Hopes

In the aftermath of the Wallabies' narrow defeat to Argentina in the Rugby Championship, coach Joe Schmidt pointed out the critical penalty imbalance that contributed significantly to the loss. During the clash in Sydney, the penalty count favored Argentina 14-7, a disparity that Schmidt attributes to a mix of reasons, while being careful not to lay blame on the officiating.

Argentina's Santiago Carreras capitalized on the skewed penalty count, slotting seven penalties to contribute 21 points to his team's total, leaving the Wallabies to rue missed opportunities despite outscoring their opponents four tries to one. Schmidt, reflecting on the team's discipline, noted, "A couple of times we have been penalised for sealing, or we have been penalised for holding on on the ground, or we have been penalised for offside." He acknowledged that these errors compounded over the match, affecting the team's confidence and positioning.

"I'm frustrated with what we didn't get right. As soon as you start getting distracted by things you don't control, there is a real risk,"

Schmidt expressed his determination to focus on what the team can control, avoiding public criticism of referee Christophe Ridley's performance. The Wallabies' captain, Harry Wilson, echoed Schmidt's sentiment, highlighting the need for the team to improve discipline internally rather than focusing on the refereeing. "Obviously, we gave away too many penalties, and some I wanted to have another look at but didn't really get too much opportunity there. We have got to be better," Wilson stated.

This defeat marked the first time a European referee officiated a Wallabies game in this Championship, with previous matches being managed by New Zealand referees. The team looks ahead to their next games, which will also be overseen by European referees, continuing their campaign with hopes of better discipline and focus.

As the Wallabies prepare to face the All Blacks, both Schmidt and Wilson are keen on drawing lessons from their recent setbacks, aiming to refine their strategies and reduce penalty concessions in these crucial upcoming matches.
