Imagine being Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt right now, grappling with a squad that’s seemingly held together with sports tape and good intentions. As Australia prepares to face the British and Irish Lions this Saturday at Suncorp Stadium, Schmidt has had to pull a rabbit out of the hat with his team selection, thanks to a cruel twist of injury fate. Leading the surprises, Nick Champion de Crespigny is set to make his Test debut, thrown into the fray in the number six jersey as Rob Valetini nurses a calf injury.

The injury woes don’t stop there; Will Skelton is also sidelined, missing out after a calf tweak against Fiji. With big boots to fill, the Wallabies’ forward pack will rely on the fresh legs of Champion de Crespigny, who’s had a meteoric rise back from the Top 14 to the Western Force, and now onto the grand stage. Joining him in the loose forwards are Fraser McReight and captain Harry Wilson, while Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams anchor the second row. The hooker spot sees Matt Faessler stepping in for the injured Dave Porecki, flanked by props James Slipper and Allan Alaalatoa.

Amidst the reshuffles, Tom Lynagh is thrust into the limelight, donning the number 10 jersey. Following in the legendary footsteps of his father, Michael Lynagh, Tom faces the Lions, marking a nostalgic moment as he pairs up with Jake Gordon at scrum-half. The centres feature the familiar duo of Len Ikitau and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, while the back three comprises Tom Wright at full-back with wingmen Max Jorgensen and the intriguingly named Harry Potter.

"The whole squad has worked hard as a group to prepare for what's going to be a massive challenge against an in-form Lions team," Schmidt remarked, emphasizing the gravity of the upcoming clash.

Despite missing the powerhouse prop Taniela Tupou, Schmidt’s bench strategy leans towards recent form, with Tom Robertson getting his first Test nod since 2022. Covering the rest of the bench are Angus Bell, Billy Pollard, Tom Hooper, and Carlo Tizzano, with Tate McDermott, Ben Donaldson, and Andrew Kellaway rounding out the backline reserves.

As the Wallabies brace themselves against a robust Lions squad, Schmidt’s mix of seasoned warriors and eager debutants sets the stage for a thrilling series opener. With the clock ticking down to Saturday’s showdown, Australia’s blend of grit and new blood will be put to the ultimate test.
