The Wallabies' preparations for their rematch with Japan have taken a hit as Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii is sidelined due to a hamstring injury. With Suaalii out, Wallabies head coach Les Kiss has called up Queensland Reds' Josh Flook to fill the gap. This change adds Flook into the fray for his first Test appearance since the team last battled Japan, presenting him with a prime opportunity to make his mark.
"Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii has picked up a minor hamstring strain playing against Japan in Osaka and won’t be available for selection for this weekend’s Test in Townsville," a Wallabies statement read. "Josh Flook will join the squad."
The timing of Suaalii's injury is less than ideal, particularly as the Wallabies look ahead to a challenging two-Test series against Argentina in September. Suaalii's recurring hamstring troubles had previously sidelined him for three months earlier this season, limiting his contributions to just five appearances for the NSW Waratahs in the Super Rugby Pacific.
In addition to Suaalii's forced omission, the Wallabies' lineup will also be without Miles Amatosero. The forward faces a three-match suspension following a red card for an illegal clearout during the first half of the recent victory over Japan. The squad does see a reinforcement with the inclusion of Exeter Chiefs' forward Tom Hooper. Returning from a shoulder injury that kept him out of the Nations Championship, Hooper is set to strengthen the pack as the team recalibrates.
