The Sharks kicked off their Vodacom URC campaign with a less-than-ideal start, succumbing to the might of the Glasgow Warriors with the scoreboard flashing a disheartening 35-19 in favor of the former champs. Despite darting out of the gates with verve at Scotstoun Stadium, John Plumtree's squad couldn't keep the momentum against the Scottish stalwarts.
Early in the fray, the Sharks showed some teeth. Newbie Edwill van der Merwe dotted down his debut try just 8 minutes in, thanks to a slick move from the backline. Unfortunately, Jaden Hendrikse, playing out of his usual position as a makeshift flyhalf, failed to convert. The Warriors quickly countered, with Kyle Rowe finding the try line soon after, successfully converted by Dan Lancaster.
The Sharks' flow seemed to stutter as the match wore on, marred by a mix of ill-discipline and disjointed play. Despite two disallowed tries, Glasgow’s Matt Fagerson managed to bulldoze his way through for a try. Yet, the Sharks clawed back momentarily when Vincent Tshituka, their captain fantastic, powered over just before halftime, narrowing the gap to a mere two points at 14-12.
The second half, however, belonged to Glasgow. Rory Darge, later crowned Man of the Match, extended the lead with a try early in the period. A moment of brilliance from Springbok center Lukhanyo Am gave Sharks fans a glimmer of hope as he masterfully executed a cross-kick to Van der Merwe, who returned the favor for Am to score.
But alas, that flicker of resistance was snuffed out by a Jamie Dobie try and a penalty try that put the game well beyond the Sharks' reach. As they lick their wounds and regroup, the Sharks are set to venture next to Wales, where they face the Dragons.
"Edwill van der Merwe is off the mark for his new #VURC team."
Another battle looms on the horizon, and for the Sharks, it’s back to the drawing board in hopes of turning potential into points on the board.
