Deon Davids, assistant coach of the Springboks, recently shed light on why Salmaan Moerat, despite being sidelined with a toe injury, remains a pivotal figure in the world champions’ squad. Moerat, who has served as captain in three of his 11 Test appearances for South Africa, is known for his resilience and leadership both on and off the field.

Moerat's inclusion in Rassie Erasmus’ 49-man squad for an alignment camp, despite his injury during a United Rugby Championship clash, speaks volumes about his value to the team. Davids emphasized Moerat's integral role, stating,

"He’s a very hard-working player, an intelligent player, and then obviously in his position, he’s a very physical player."

This combination of intellect, hard work, and physicality makes Moerat indispensable.

Davids further elaborated on Moerat's abilities, specifically his impact in the lock position.

"He can give us momentum, he stops momentum. He’s very physical in general play, especially when it comes down to the breakdown."

These attributes are crucial at the Test level, where controlling the pace and physicality of the game often determines the outcome.

The decision to repeatedly select Moerat, despite some public criticism, is backed not only by Davids but also by other high-profile figures in South African rugby. Former Springboks coach Nick Mallett compared Moerat's style to that of legendary enforcer Bakkies Botha, highlighting his exceptional tackling and ability to disrupt mauls. Mallett noted, "When he plays a really good game for the Stormers, you’ll see that he’ll have made 15, 16 clean outs of rucks. He’s the Bakkies Botha-esque type hitter of rucks. He stops mauls. He (also) generates more maul power. But he’s very, very good at stopping mauls."

Moerat’s blend of leadership, physical prowess, and tactical intelligence underscores his ongoing selection for the Springboks, illustrating that performance and attitude together forge the calibre of player essential for maintaining championship standards on the global stage.
