Zac Lomax, previously a noted figure in the NRL, has taken a brief detour through rugby union with the Western Force, but is poised for a sensational return to rugby league. The wing, known for his dynamic play, is set to join the Papua New Guinea Chiefs after his stint with the Force concludes.
His upcoming move was highlighted in a video released on social media, which showed Lomax expressing his excitement and gratitude to the Chiefs fans at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby. The PNG Chiefs, a new addition to the NRL set to start in 2028, welcomed Lomax's enthusiasm warmly.
"PNG, thank you very much guys. I just want to say, thank you so much everyone. It’s an absolute privilege," said Lomax. "I am super honoured to be committed to you guys, and it’s such a great opportunity for all of us boys and everyone that is going to be coming over to the PNG Chiefs. We are going to shock the NRL, I am telling you and I can’t wait to be a part of it."
Earlier this year, Lomax had transitioned to rugby union after signing a two-year deal with the Western Force. He debuted in April in a match against the Fijian Drua in Lautoka, showcasing his skills in the 15-a-side format, despite the team’s defeat.
Throughout his career, Lomax has accumulated a wealth of experience in rugby league, with 133 NRL appearances mainly for the St. George Illawarra and Parramatta Eels. His prowess on the field also earned him caps for New South Wales in the State of Origin series and for Australia on the international stage.
However, his journey in rugby union was not without its challenges. After just seven appearances for the Force, Lomax was sidelined from the Wallabies’ Nations Championship Tests due to a groin injury. Though out of these games, he remains a candidate to represent the Australia A team in their upcoming matches against the USA Eagles.
The Wallabies are also gearing up for an intensive series in November, where they will face England, Scotland, and Wales. This end-of-year tour promises to be a crucial phase for the team, as they test their mettle against some of the strongest teams in the northern hemisphere.
