Zach Porthen Impresses in Springboks Victory

Rassie Erasmus has expressed his satisfaction with Zach Porthen's performance for the Springboks in their recent match against England. Despite limited playtime in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, Porthen, a tighthead prop from the Stormers, made a significant impact in only his fourth Test match. Coming off the bench at Ellis Park, his dynamic play not only caught the attention of spectators but also affirmed the coaches' faith in his abilities.

Erasmus noted the challenges Porthen faced due to limited game time. "We would’ve loved Zach to play more games in the United Rugby Championship," he explained. The coach believes that facing tough competition is crucial for a player's development, which Porthen experienced during intense training sessions. "He would’ve been roughed up as a tighthead, and we want him to go through tough times. That has happened in the last three weeks where he’s been scrumming against Ox Nché, Gerhard Steenekamp, and Ntuthuko Mchunu."

"We saw what he did there and there’s no doubt regarding his open play, but he’s a fantastic player."

Despite the scant match evidence available to assess Porthen, Erasmus remarked on the consistent impression he made during the national team's training camps. "I guess we didn’t see a lot of him in the URC and didn’t have a lot of evidence, but we were happy with what we saw in training."

Porthen's robust showing against England not only highlights his potential but also likely secures him more opportunities as the Springboks proceed with their Nations Championship campaign. Their next encounter will see them up against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

This performance and the ongoing support from the coaching staff suggest a bright future for Porthen in international rugby, potentially anchoring him as a regular feature in the Springbok lineup.
