Zekhethelo Siyaya Thrives in Springbok Pressure

Sharks standout Zekhethelo Siyaya reflects on his enriching stint with the Springbok squad, affirming his ability to thrive under intense pressure. The 21-year-old fullback from the small town of éDumbe in KwaZulu-Natal has swiftly climbed the rugby ladder, transitioning from a scholarship at Westville Boys’ High School to making significant strides in the Sharks Academy and earning his debut in the Vodacom URC. Now donning the South Africa A jersey, his journey represents one of the most thrilling ascents in regional rugby.

Despite an early exit due to injury in SA A’s recent match against Zimbabwe in Gqeberha, Siyaya treasures his time in the national camp. "That environment is very special and for me it is the next step towards the ultimate dream of being a Springbok," he shared. Daily interactions in the camp offered him endless opportunities for personal and professional growth, surrounded by top-tier talent.

"I honestly didn’t know if I could survive that kind of intensity, but I did,"

Siyaya admitted that the experience was a true test of his adaptability, especially when he was required to master new lineout calls and moves within a tight two-day timeframe.

At the Sharks, Siyaya has found his groove, crediting head coach JP Pietersen for fostering a supportive environment. "Coach JP doesn’t put you in a corner. He trusts that you know what you’re capable of, I really love that about his coaching style," Siyaya remarked. He also praised the influence of senior teammates like André Esterhuizen, which has been instrumental in his development.

With a new rugby season on the horizon, Siyaya is buoyed by the influx of fresh talent at the Sharks and anticipates an exciting, attack-oriented style of play, supported by the seasoned pros. Beyond the field, he is conscious of his role as a beacon of hope for young fans, especially those from challenging backgrounds. "I want the kids in the stands to see hope," he stated. "I want them to see that even if you come from a difficult background, you can still make it. Just know your goal, know where you want to be and play with zero fear and absolute commitment."

The Sharks are poised for a promising season, with Siyaya at the forefront, ready to inspire both on and off the pitch.
