KEY FACTS
The man, Bradley Bunn, was arrested by agents at his home in Loveland, Colorado, after FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearm and Explosives agents found four pipe bombs and other potential pipe bomb components inside the house.
While it’s not clear what he planned to use the bombs for, Bunn popped up on federal law enforcement radar after encouraging people to bring assault rifles to a planned May 1 protest against Colorado’s coronavirus restrictions on social media, ABC News reports.
The social media posts were described as “angry and aggressive” by one official who spoke to ABC News.
The FBI also said that Bunn had previously brought high-powered weapons to protests in front of the Colorado state Capitol.
Officials received information that Bunn was in possession of pipe bombs, according to ABC, and Bunn was arrested before he could attend the May 1 rally; the bombs and gunpowder were taken to a range where they were detonated.
Bunn faces charges of possessing destructive devices, the U.S. Attorney’s office says, and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted; Bunn is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday afternoon.
KEY BACKGROUND
In recent weeks, protests have broken out across the country against restrictions put in place by governors to slow the spread of the virus outbreak, even as 24 states have already begun to reopen. Some protesters have brought guns to the protests, and images of the demonstrations have gone viral on social media.
CRUCIAL QUOTE
President Trump has express support for some of the protests and has argued some governors have gone too far.
“Liberate Michigan,” Trump tweeted on April 17.
TANGENT
Dr. Deborah Birx said Sunday that protests last week in the Michigan state legislature against stay-at-home orders were "devastatingly worrisome to me personally" and said she was concerned they would go on to infect elderly relatives and “feel guilty over for the rest of our lives.”
