I was a kid when he was fighting.

...but I remember his name and have watched reruns of his fights.

Anybody remember Pierre Coetzer?

I met his some years ago. A family friend who does smelting was approached by some guys and asked if he could smelt copper for them.

Incidentally, I was at his workshop to pick up something on a day when they guys were collecting the copper ingots. It was a dang lot of copper. They had three huge flatbed trucks there, and about 5 security vehicles...all leaving in a convoy once the copper had been loaded.

As we were standing there, watching the copper being loaded, I see this guy with a massive moustache approaching. The chap that was with me recognised him instantly. It was Pierre Coetzer. Apparently he was the security coordinator for, or something, for the operation. We chatted to him for a bit and he was very friendly. Same as most guys that fought at that level, he had this leopard seal look in his eyes, but it was weirdly contrasted by his friendly demeanour.

It gave me big time Lock Stock vibes.

Ja I remember Pierre Coetzer, I was only a lad back then though. Gerrie Coetzee was the other famous heavyweight of that era I think. I remember he fought a bloke called Michael Dokes. Why I've forgotten almost everything about that time but I remember that name is one of the mysteries of memory.

Now that’s a memory….I got up with my father at 4 in the morning to watch Gerrie Coetzee beat Michael Dokes:)

And also let’s not forget Brian Mitchell….most probably SA,s most successful Boxer?

Loma is probably my favourite all time fighter...

He's been robbed once or twice but, for me, he epitomises the sweet science.

And then Crawford is objectively probably the best fighter of this generation. Nobody has even come close to beating him.

Why is he better than Mayweather? Cos Mayweather made a career out of running away and Crawford has made one out of coming to a fight to fight...and damn can he fight.
