IMHO AB Is not even the second best leader in that team. He is the captain because he is the best player. Primary school mentality to select a captain for such reason. Like I said it's my opinion.

Agreed with DbDraad, AB is arguably the best ODI batsman but he isn't the best leader. Unfortunately there's no one in the team that I see as a natural leader. We've lost a few in recent years (Smith, Kallis, Boucher), it's time for someone to step up.I think Cricket is slightly different to rugby or football as far as captains go - in cricket decision making is key, a game is lost or won on who you choose to bowl when and your field placing, it's simply not enough to just lead by example.

We've had some great captains both in rugby and cricket...good captains are not necessary the best players but when this is, it is a double bonus.
Morne Du Plessis was a great captain and player, so was Gary Teichmann . John Smit and Francois Pienaar where exceptional captains, Bobby was was an exceptional player but not the best captain.
Eddie Barlow, Clive Rice were exceptional captains but Hansie Cronje was both an exceptional captain and player but ruined his career by having the sin of greed but was man enough to truly repent.

Saff, I am just playing devils advocate here, but many people did not rate Skinstad. For me, he was a bit too much like Spies and a bit of a show pony! Anyway, that is not really the point I am trying to make here. Simply put, is it worth having a captain who is great, but at the expense of a better player? Also, does the principle apply to rugby as it does to cricket?
