His average is 73.6 at an 89.4 strike rate. Stellar really. Dwarfing the likes of Ock who has an average of 45.2 albeit at a slightly higher strike rate. The difference is also that Dussen can make the big innings when it really counts, he did that at the WC and today. Time to give this chap his due.

Best innings by a SA bat in an ODI in a very long time.

He is very skilful and yesterday’s innings was fantastic. Perhaps in the longer version he’s a victim of changing his natural game too much. And isn’t it funny how we hit 300 with no issues in 50 overs but can’t manage it in 5 dayers? Will be interesting to look at the scores after the ODI series and compare the totals to those achieved in the tests. Bavuma has also been looking good. What I noticed yesterday was that, for some reason, we was using his ability to turn length balls into semi-short deliveries while hitting through cover and mid-wicket solidly. Being as short as he is, and considering that it was what he was doing when he first got into the Proteas, I thought that was part and parcel of his technique. I made a post here ages ago, saying that he appeared to emulate Tendulkar’s in being able to punish length, forcing bowlers fuller. But then it all but disappeared from his game. Yesterday, he was doing that regularly again and used it perfectly to keep rotating the strike. Hopefully he’s confident enough now to play to that strength going forward. If Amla listened to people that told him to stop flashing outside off, he wouldn’t be nearly as successful. Point is, stick with the girl that brought you to the party.

Interesting post Plum. I was thinking the same thing about Dussen, he looks a better bat in the 50 over game…much more decisive.

I haven’t really picked up on the point you make about Bavuma though, and I’ll look next time.

So some of these guys flout the given wisdom and succeed. That’s not working for the Ockster though….bowled through the gate again yesterday. How often hasn’t he been bowled, or played on, that way in the last few months. His bat looks miles away from his body and his hands hinge so high, the timing has to be perfect.

There’s one bowler that won’t ever get Quintie out…Richie McCaw. He never goes in through the gate. At this point Quintie should just take over from Miller when he retires. Come in and swing for the fences. Maybe it comes off maybe it doesn’t. In a way, I’m glad he retired from Tests. I think Verrynne will be a lot more reliable and actually hit meaningful 100s as opposed to getting big scores when we’re gonna win anyway.
