or risky to predict the winner of what now has become the most entertaining CWC, ever.

Stepping into the breach is a silly thing to do when it comes to cricket or golf. I'm a silly man hahaha

There are a few certain things worth noting after having witnessed the world's finest strutting their stuff....

a) Oz and NZ have the best attack, and of the two the Black Caps are the most balanced  with DV as spinner.

b) Depending on the wicket and ground, no team is going to score more than 300 runs against them... their attack is that good that a huge score is only achievable by great batting.

c) Alongside of rule changes and the influence of T20, ODI's have become far more appealing and entertaining. The game has been altered for the good.

d) It now means that big hitting starts at the top of the innings and continues through the middle-order.....big hitting is no longer middle-order dependent.

So which team has the best chance of winning the WC?

Going back to my original selections prior to the WC I had it listed as..

1) Oz

2) Kiwi's

3) SA

This might be a surprise to some but I'm stepping into the breach by dissing the Kiwis....why?....simply because their batting is a one man band in the scintillating form of Brendon McCullum. Kane Williamson, Guptill and a couple of the other Kiwi batsmen are all  reasonable batters but nowhere in the class of McCullum who can't be contained. So unless they bowl the opposition out for a miserly score like they did against Oz, something that will never happen again, I simply cannot see the Kiwis getting through against both SA and Oz.... specially if McCullum fails. The MCG where the final will be played is a huge ground and a touch unfamiliar to Kiwi batsmen who thus far have played and won on small grounds.

Of the rest of the contenders, India is obviously the best....I don't rate their chances against either NZ or Oz.

The Proteas are a huge chance but only if they have a fit team and freeze selection on colour. They have big hitters aplenty and they bat deep. Arguably they have the best spinner in Tahir.

There are questions around the Oz batting, we know what they can do with the ball and we know the MCG is home and sacred turf.Oz tick too many boxes, they remain my winner.

Go Proteas!

The Quaterfinals is where the problem should start for teams to go through.   My guess is that the following will ultimately be the scenario:-
Pool A
1.   New Zealand2.   Australia3    SriLanka4    England
Pool B
1     India2     South Africa3     West Indies4     Ireland
The quarterfinals are played at the following venues:-
1  New Zealand vs Ireland      =   Sydney2  Australia  vs  West Indies   =   Melbourne3  SriLanka  vs  South Africa   =   Adelaide4  England  vs India               =   Wellington

I am not sure about New Zealand either.  On home pitches they are good - but as is indicated they will not play in the quarterfinals on a home pitch.   I am not sure which of  Ireland or the West Indies will fill the no 4 position in Pool B and would put my money on Ireland.
After that one semi is in Australia (Melbourne) and one in New Zealand (Aucland).   I think the winning teams will be grouped according to their net run rate in the quarterfinals.   It is impossible to determine the teams yet - but it may even happen that New Zealand may not play another match at home after the round robin matches.
Very early to predict - but I think the final may be between SA and Australia.
Insofar as the pool matches is concerned - we have to play Pakistan at Canberra on Tuesday and then Ireland and the UAE in New Zealand.   In all fairness I do not think any of Pakistan, Ireland or the UAE can beat SA - so lets wait and see what happens.

Best attack is SA with Steyn, Morkel, Philander and Tahir.....we also have the best bats......Our biggest issue is ourselves.

We are the best side on paper by some distance. Paper does not win cricket games though

 Agree with Saf
On paper, we are an incredible team.
But the name "Cricket World Cup" brings out the worst in us.

I hope we can get rid of that nemesis this time round.

I think the letter from Russell's cousin to A.B was spot on.
I truly hope he read it. It may just be the wake up tonic the squad needed.

lol my best part of the letter was Crowe describing Steyns 'stunned mullet look'

The Kiwis and Ozzies would have similar thoughts.

The Kiwi and Oz side does not come close to ours on paper.....if we perform to our true potential, no side could live with us

In the WC there seems to be a problem not necessarily related to the team itself, but in some cases to outside factors.  Now lets look at some of those:-
*   The 1992 WC - we needed 22 runs off 14 balls - it started to rain and the situation ended up that we had to make 22 runs from 1 ball.   The team had no control over that.
*   The 1999 WC - in two games to smart ass players (Gibbs and Klusener) caused us to be losing out on that one - Gibbs by not holding on to a catch he made of Steve Waugh and chucking the ball away - leading to the catch not being recognized by the umpire (Waugh told Gibbs "You have just lost the WC for SA") - and Klusener taking a mad run causing a run out of himself with three balls to spare needing one run in the semis against Australia.  A team cannot be blamed for stupidity of individual players.
*    In 2003 the management sent the wrong Douglas-Lewis  particulars to the batters and instead of taking a run off the last ball of the 45th over they lost the game against SriLanka when rain started and the match had to be abandoned.
*    In 2011 Graeme Smith and Kallis both failed and showed no interest in the quarter-final - Smith not even returning to SA after that game and going straight to Ireland.
Sure - there were team problems caused by non-thinking players - but there were also circumstances beyond the control of the team that cause disasters for the team in WC's
In previous years we had very few players rated high on the rankings of team players - this time the top ten in ODI's of both the bowlers and batsmen have numerous SA players.
There are a few things to happen -  Amla is very slow in making runs - especially early on - and De Kock is not producing the goods after his lay-off due to injury.   There are three more pool games to correct those two issues.   If we have all players available - I would say our batting line-up of -
De Kock, Amla, Du Plessis, Rossouw, De Villiers, Miller and Duminy
is stronger than any of the other teams.
I am particularly impressed by Rillee Rossouw - he is getting better in every game he played in.   But he is not an opening batsman and it will be a waste to use him as such.    Be it as it may - if four of those batsmen fire - then the total runs will be too high for virtually all teams to get - provided the bowling attack does not go awry .
Our bowling is good enough - and the fifth bowler can be Duminy and one or two of the other part-timers.   They will not make an unholy mess of the 10 overs they have to bowl - as was the case when they tried Parnell as the fifth bowler.
