Paradise to fly fishers, small pastoral country streams and Adhuri River...Te Anahu pub...great...you can watch rugby on screen ...if you have enough energy  and the Oreti River to fly fishing fanastics..food good and efficient friendly...Queenstown NZ next stop...paradise...what about Te Anau...huge mountain 9lb brown trout suspended in waters so clear that it requires genuiness to catch.

You guys live in heaven as far as I'm concerned

Seb when I was a young single bloke a mate of mine and myself worked our way around the Sth Island ,we were both riding Motorbikes and we were both keen fishermen [ we actually started from my former hometown of Turangi and stopped to fish the Rangataiki river and Admirals pool of Zane Grey fame] We worked in Queenstown for 6 months and at least once a week I would go down to the jetty on lake Te Anau to gaze longingly at the massive brown trout [ and one huge blue eyed duck eating eel !] swimming around in water so clear you could see every grain of sand 10m down......and if you tried to catch 'em you would end up in that lake with a boulder tied to ya ! NZ is the fly fishermans paradise alrighty ! When I went to a family reunion last year they had been fishing the day before and caught an enormous number of trout [ which strangely enough was exactly the catch limit for each fisherman !] on both fly and lure .Brownies fight better but crayfish fed [ koura] rainbows freshly smoked are definately the biz .Seb if you havent been then bucket list brother for sure .

Good day to you Mozart and a very good day to Herr Beankop ,and in the spirit of all this kameraderie I think Mr Mozart should dumb it down a smidge to help unknit poor beaners brows .He probably thinks your referring to some form of Antipodean outdoor drunkenness .....Beaner bring that brain/boil over here and I'll lance it for ya ,mind you yer head may well cave in !

Beano, they're pulling your leg ........... its getting some kai (food) & having a boil-up

Boil ups usually consist of, Pork bones, water cress, potatoes, dough-boys and maybe some pumpkin and kumara - all of these ingredients cooked in a big pot. - Ka Pai (very good) .

Not that I wish to compare, totally different places, but Stillbaai will always be my favorite coastal destination. Love the place! Been going there since I've been a toddler.Wiki   note the Blombos reference.
Please take note of the fish traps as well!
PS Wardad, there used to be some good fishing going on . Haven't been there in 10 years, so things might have changed...high time for a trip methinks.

DbD, natuurlik .......... I was intending to come over this Christmas but that's looking unlikely for a variety of reasons . Hopefully next year we can have that beer & I'll bring a bag of samosas from a corner cafe ( they called a dairy in NZ ) that I know on Sir Lowry Rd ,  . Every now & then I'll try the local variety but they don't even come close & could easily be used as a doorstop .

A friend of mine who is a well known fly fisherman, along with another well known guy in this activity visited this part and others in NZ, just raves about the rivers and trout of NZ...it's a paradise...you guys are very fortunate...the fish are big and require huge skill to catch in the wide crystal clear water. They fish to sighted trout which in itself requires tremendous craft and stalking without spooking them. The choice of flies has to imitate those insects they are feeding on...most often so small that you can put several on a small fingernail. This is a major part of the fun.

They always release these beauties gently so as to maintain the stock...an unselfish gesture to conserve fishing for younger generations to come

When I was a wee laddie just about started school in Turangi my fishing kit consisted of a sharpened pitch fork .Not very sporting but very effective ,at least till me grand dad took it off me and gave me his old split cane rod and well used hardy reel .Not as effective but slightly more sporting !
