Doorshus….has any nation mangled more words.
The Aussies turn Dwarshuis into…..
Nothing beats Labushane
Well, think of it this way... the name fits perfectly for the squatters living on pavements in Washington, New York, Chicago, and so on.
Yes except these squatters live in Australia.
To get back to reality the player's father is from the Netherlands - but I have never head of that surname before. There was an Aart vab der Dussen whom I worked with in the 1960's and I think he is the grandfaher of .Van der Dussen - but anther Dutch surname I came across was Hoenderdoos,
Apparently when Napoleon invaded the Netherlands only the royalty and educated elite used surnames and the French ruled that all people must register surnames. The Dutch wanted to undermine the system by registerin surnames of he weirdest kind thinking that after the departure of he French they would get rid of the weird surnames but unfortunately the registered surnames remained in use under the new monarchy so they and their descendents had to live with it,
There are some variations though. There was an English person by the name of John White who arrived in the capre in the 1720's and married a local woman. His name was changed to Jan de Wit and he was for years a leading member of he Burgerraad = which was the Cape Town Municipal Council until the 1850's. Jan de Wit was the ancestor of all De Wits living in South Africa and probbly worlwide by now.
There are other links between the Dutch Royal family and South Africa. Queen Juliana's husband Prince Bernhard and Anton Rupert were founder members of the World Wildlife Foundation and he vsited SA frequently without any fanfare,
Another ineresting link is the relationship between Prince Bernard and Ian Fleming - the writer of the James Bond Books, The following gives some information on hat link
:The largely unknown 'Ian Fleming - Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands'-connection
He was considered one of the most flamboyant, charming and funny members of the Dutch Royal Family: Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld, Prince of The Netherlands and prince-consort of Dutch Queen Juliana of Orange-Nassau, Queen of The Netherlands. By: Gert Waterink (Gustav_Graves)
Together with Queen Juliana they had four children (and two other illegitimate daughters from a certain Ms. Bielefeld and from French model Hélène Grinda), including the current Dutch Queen Beatrix.-
What many people, and especially Bond fans, do not know, was the fact that Prince Bernhard worked for the British Intelligence Services during World War II. The Second World War forced the Dutch royal family to live in exile in London. For Prince Bernhard it was hard to find an honourable job in the United Kingdom, as he was of German origin. The War Admiralty, and later General Eisenhower's Allied Command offices, could not fully trust him, thus a full screening of Bernhard's past life was required
That screening was actually executed by the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming, on behalf of Winston Churchill. After Fleming's screening was positive and no convincing relation of Bernhard with the NAZI's and the Hitlerjugend could be found, he was permitted to work in the Allied war planning councils.
Ian Fleming, who personally knew Bernhard from their war efforts and from luncheons in the Lincoln's Inn Hotel in London, based some features of his fictional character James Bond on Bernhard.
The following about Queen Beatrix sister Princess Irene
In 1999 Princess Irene purchased a farm near Nieu-Bethesda in South Africa, turning it into a sanctuary.[50] In 2001, she helped establish the NatuurCollege in the Netherlands.[51] She is also the founder of NatureWise, an organization that brings elementary school children in the Netherlands directly in touch with nature.[52][53] The Princess is an honorary member of the Club of Budapest.
Princess Irene for the main part of the year lives on the farm and never give press interviews. If rare people - mostly people linked to nature conservation - are invited to have dinner with her they are warned not to address her as princess and merely call her Irene.
In a way the Dutch are funny people - but almost as stingy as the Scots are. .
