A hero in the awful Texas flood

This story pulled at many heartstrings….young girls at a summer camp swept away by an incredible flash flood. Amid the sadness there is some pride, brave rescue efforts especially by one man:

’United States Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and Petty Officer Scott Ruskin, directly saved an astonishing 165 victims in the devastating flooding in central Texas," she wrote, adding, "This was the first rescue mission of his career and he was the only triage coordinator at the scene. Scott Ruskin is an American hero. His selfless courage embodies the spirit and mission of the @USCG."

‘The river apparently rose 26 feet in 45 minutes…incredible, but it happens in these dry, hilly areas when massive rains take place.

The Coast Guard is one of the worthwhile charities, anywhere in the world, never needed until they are really needed. This is one of their finest hours and one of the saddest for the parents of those poor girls just beginning to live their lives.

Undoubtedly a hero ............

I saw the video of the one river... and it actually rose to it's full level, in just under 4 minutes, that's just how quickly some of these ravines and valleys assisted the speed that these rivers increased their volume, height and width.

Independent meteorologists and a former NWS official have already said that the warnings that were issued in the run up to the flooding were about as timely and accurate as could be expected with the weather data that was available in real time.

Keep in mind as well that these floodwaters surged through Texas Hill Country, otherwise known as "Flash Flood Valley:

The NWS actually sent out it's first warning of flash floods for Thursday in Kerrville, Texas, and surrounding areas, with Andy Brown, the Travis County Judge and Eric Carter, the county's chief emergency management co-ordinator describing the weather service as being "very proactive with their warnings"

As most people are already saying, the issue wasn't really about sending the warning messages out to the people, because that is what they did with tag lines of "Considerable" and "Catastrophic" providing the people with preliminary lead times of about 3 hours before the big floods ....it was about the people actually receiving the messages... especially, I assume, when flood warnings are going out from 01:14am which is when I expect most people to be sleeping.
