Moore’s piece points out the distortions, lies and hidden costs of ‘alternative energy’. In all likelihood burning oil remains the only practical answer to much of our needs.
But some are concerned resultant temp increases threaten us.....I‘m not. I think studying exotic viruses in labs threatens us. But let’s accept their view for the moment.
I do believe that our consumption of limited resources as outlined in the movie, does threaten our descendants. The idea that we can do without all these things places a huge burden on future generations to innovate, just to survive. That’s an unfair hurdle man hasn’t faced in the past.
So I’m all for any way of preserving resources. Here’s a simple way. The Honda Odessey is a 7 seat Wagon that can accommodate most families. With modern engine technology it flies 0 to 100 ks in 7 seconds.
Now go back to 1965....the faster four door sedans were running about 10 seconds 0 to 100. And that was fine.....fast enough, enjoyable.
In fact I would argue the fun factor in cars has not increased since those days. Many of today’s cars are just too fast. Drive a Ferrari Enzo for example and it slams through the gears in a series of brief explosions that are over in a blink. Wind out an old Alfa GTV and the experience is much richer.
So suppose we reset performance to say 1970 levels. We’ll save at a guess 25% or more in terms of fuel. And I’m guessing a 25% fuel reduction would swamp any benefit we are likely to see from alternative fuels for many years.
Piece of cake....so far the car companies have been focused on better performance with no more fuel....put the emphasis on satisfactory performance with way less fuel. And let’s stop destroying the earth the way Moore demonstrated.
