1. Mass Detention and Cultural Repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang
Since 2017, over a million Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities have been detained in internment camps in Xinjiang. Detainees face forced labor, political indoctrination, torture, and sexual violence. Reports also indicate forced sterilizations and suppression of religious practices. These actions have been described by some as crimes against humanity and, in certain cases, genocide.
2. Suppression of Political Dissent and Civil Liberties
The Chinese government continues to crack down on political dissent. Human rights lawyers, activists, and journalists are often subjected to arbitrary detention, secret trials, and harsh sentencing. For instance, lawyer Yu Wensheng and his wife Xu Yan were imprisoned for attempting to meet with European diplomats. In Hong Kong, the National Security Law has been used to arrest pro-democracy activists and journalists, effectively dismantling the city’s autonomy and freedoms.
3. Religious Oppression in Tibet
Tibetan Buddhists face severe restrictions on religious freedom. Monasteries are under strict surveillance, and expressions of loyalty to the Dalai Lama are criminalized. In a recent case, a Tibetan monk fled China to seek the Dalai Lama’s blessing, highlighting the risks faced by those practicing their faith.
4. Transnational Repression of Dissidents
China extends its repression beyond its borders, targeting dissidents and ethnic minorities abroad. Tactics include surveillance, harassment, and coercion of exiled individuals and their families. Uyghurs and other activists have reported threats and intimidation in countries like Kazakhstan, Turkey, and the United States.
5. Forced Labor and Economic Exploitation
Forced labor remains a critical issue, particularly in Xinjiang, where Uyghurs are compelled to work in various industries, including cotton production. International hotel chains have been criticized for operating in regions linked to such abuses, potentially legitimizing the government’s actions.
