Now that the RWC is over and the SH rugby is on holiday - one has time to look at politics again. Nothing is really happening in the USA other than a mock impeachment process that is likely to go nowhere, the focus is on Europe.
Spain
The country held an election in April 2019 and the result was as follows:-
After that election the party situation was as follows:-
Socialists (PSOE) - 126 (gain 37 seats)
Popular Party - 66 (loss 77 seats)
Citizens Part (C's) - 57 (gain 32 seats)
Extreme Socialists - 42 (loss 29 seats
VOX (Right wing) - 24 (gain 24 seats)
VOX is a new party and only got off the ground during 2018. I left the smaller parties out of calculation. Be it as it may the Socialists tried to form a Government and that did not work out - so a new election was held in November 2019 and the situation is even bleaker when it comes to finding a new governing coalition.
The latest election results are as follows:-
Socialists (PSOE) - 123 (loss 3 seats)
Popular Party - 88 (gain 22 seats)
VOX (Right wing) - 52 (gain 28 seats)
Extreme Socialists - 35 (loss 7 seats)
Citizens Party (C's) - 10 (loss 47 seats)
If it was difficult to form a Government before - it is virtually impossible now. After the April election the Socialists combined had 168 seats and they had to relay on some fringe and regional parties to get past the 170 seat requirement. When they could not retain that support an election became necessary. A this stage the Socialists combined has 158 seats and the extra 12 is nowhere in sight, The other problem si that nobody would work with VOX and that will jeopardize a potential coalition government anyway,
Will another election be necessary nobody seems to know.
