The voting for the 28 member states starts today and would take place in different countries over the next 4 days, Unlike in the past the results will not be announced before the final closing of the voting on Sunday in countries.
This may be caused by major political upheavels in most EU countries over the past year and the fear that results in the UK and Netherlands - who are voting today - may influence voting in other counties,
There is one aspect that is part and parcel of the EU - it is by some distance not a real democracy and in many ways dictatorial. The EU Parliament compared to other parliaments in democratic countries have no real decision-making powers, They are only required to rubberstamp EU Commission decisions and they cannot change anything in legislation submitted to them for approval - even appointment of Parliamentary officials are decided on by the Commission and cannot be changed by Parliament.
It seems that the EU wants to pretend that they are a democratic institution with a Parliament - but other than being a talking shop the EU Parliament has no real powers. They cannot for instance vote out Executives once appointed and there is no provision for any vote of no confidence in the Executive - normally made up of politicians who lost their positions in the home countries.
