The carotid arteries are two major blood vessels, one on each side of the neck, that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain and head. Each common carotid artery splits into an internal carotid artery (supplying the brain) and an external carotid artery (supplying the face and neck). Conditions affecting the carotid arteries, such as carotid artery disease, which involves plaque buildup (atherosclerosis), can restrict blood flow and lead to stroke.
