NEW YORK (AP) — Grammy-nominated singer and “Fast & Furious” actor Tyrese grew up around police brutality, gang violence, murders and psychological trauma in the Watts neighborhood of Southern Los Angeles. But the artist known for R&B hits focused on love (“Sweet Lady”) and relationship woes (“How You Gonna Act Like That”) said he never felt comfortable singing songs about those painful and weighty topics.

Until now.

Tyrese said watching the death of George Floyd inspired him to create the song “Legendary” and its powerful accompanying video “8:46” — a reference to the length of time prosecutors once said Floyd was pinned to the ground under a white Minneapolis police officer’s knee before he died (it was really seven minutes, 46 seconds).

Both the song and video will be released Friday.

“I am completely irrelevant in music. I have not been on the charts. I have not had a presence. I have not done anything to contribute hotness or relevancy tied into music. When I say that George Floyd’s death has given me life, this is what I mean: He has lit a fire in me that has had me sitting dormant,” Tyrese said.

“When you see and witness something so painful and traumatizing, you are reminded through Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin that in one second your life can be taken away from you. As a singer, I have never had the (courage) or audacity to ever sing about anything that touches into these types of topics.”

“Legendary,” co-starring CeeLo Green, features Tyrese singing and rapping, while the video includes a scene of Tyrese with his face pressed against the ground as an officer’s knee cripples his neck, replicating the last moments of Floyd’s life.

All of the proceeds from the song and video will be donated and managed by the office of civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the families of Floyd, Taylor, Arbery and Jacob Blake, the Black man who became paralyzed after being shot multiple times by police in Wisconsin on Sunday.

With Crump's help, Tyrese received the families’ blessing to create “Legendary” and “8:46,” which infuses footage from recent protests. The video, directed by Deon Taylor, who directed Tyrese and Naomie Harris in the 2019 police drama “Black and Blue,” will premiere Friday on BET.

“The truth is this song ‘Legendary’ is the most uncomfortable thing that I’ve ever done in my life,” said Tyrese, who added that the multiple deaths of Black people “has caused me to lose a lot of sleep.”

“I’m more vulnerable than I have ever been in my life,” the 41-year-old continued. “I am not in fear of my life. I fear no man, but I am specifically aware that I am stepping into a realm that I have never stepped in ever in my life.”

Like Tyrese, a handful of artists have released songs detailing the Black experience in the U.S. and the violent protests around the world, including Beyoncé, Meek Mill, DaBaby, The Killers, Trey Songz, Lil Baby, T-Pain, Kane Brown, Ty Dolla $ign, T.I., YG, Mickey Guyton, Terrace Martin, Leon Bridges and more.

Even though Tyrese’s music video hasn’t been released yet, he said he’s already gotten a tremendous response from some of his famous friends, including Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Vin Diesel, Taraji P. Henson, Lee Daniels, Ava DuVernay, “Joker” director Todd Phillips, Steve Harvey and “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin.

“They have all seen it. They have all responded. They have all stood with me,” he said. “They have all validated ‘Legendary.’”

Tyrese’s last album, “Black Rose,” was released in 2015. He said though it has taken time for him to use music to speak out about heavy topics, he wants to acknowledge those celebrities who have been bold and vocal.

“Beyoncé’s ‘Black is King’ changed my life and changed me forever. We need to protect Beyoncé at all costs. Whatever visions and ideas this powerful Black queen has bouncing around in her mind, we need to be willing to protect her at all costs,” he said. “We need to protect LeBron James at all costs. He has decided to boldly and specifically step into carrying the torch of speaking up and speaking out.”

“I am so proud of Colin Kaepernick,” Tyrese added. “Long before it was ever cool to speak up and speak out, he took a knee on behalf of peaceful protest. He compromised his own survival to peacefully protest and speak up and speak out about something that’s on his heart.”

Yeah, let's all sing songs about violent thugs that rob pregnant woman by holding guns to their stomachs.

What a fucking joke.

One wonders what story of victimhood Denny would regale us with were it his wife that Floyd the career criminal robbed that day.

They are making George Floyd out to be a martyr …. it's actually embarrassing

Any reason to get a new pair of Nike shoes

Those cops acted like murderous thugs, it was a disgusting act, to lean on anyone like that, George Floyd was not posing any immediate threat, and there were other officers on the scene that could have provided back up at any given time, should it have escalated at any point.

Now this new shooting, a guy walks away from cops, after breaking up a fight..... and after repeated warnings to stop..... h e proceeds to his car, despite numerous warnings to stop and put his hands up..... gets to his vehicle, forces open the front door.... then leans inside to get something..... and gets shot....

In this day and age, with cops being recklessly murdered and gunned down everywhere, you are being dumb, stupid and reckless with yours and your kids lives, if you want to lean into a car for something, when multiple cops have guns trained on you, asking you to stop

Black, White, Indian, Chinese.... I don't care.... .you  are incredibly fucking dumb to do that

While we are at it...let's take a moment to remember this guy. Y ou'll note, never mentioned and very far away from Denny's thoughts as he strides through the fields of his victimhood.

A black cop, retired but still working as a security guard, gunned down for no reason other than trying to stop a privately owned business from being looted and destroyed.

Remember, these were peaceful protesters that shot and killed this innocent and upstanding man.

No thoughts on this poor man, Denny? Nah, if he's murdered by other blacks then fuck it, there's no guilt currency there huh.

Fucking disgraceful.

What happened too George Floyd was unnecessary and horrible. But he actively resisted arrest for more than 10 minutes prior to the incident, he was high as a kite and had violent priors. How do you physically restrain someone almost the size of Eben Etzebeth who is also under the influence of narcotics? What would minim force have been in this case? What is the correct protocol in cases like this? Was there a clear prescribed protocol for restraining big individuals under the influence and how much did the officer deviate from such guidelines and why? Lots of questions to be answered, but George Floyd was no saint. Nobody deserves to die like that, but he played a large role in his own demise...if this is the best martyr they can find in the USA, they have very little to complain about.

Apparently a black church in a black neighbourhood has just been burnt down.
I support anti-racism causes in general, but not when people burn stuff down.
I also support anti-gender discrimination- but women are not burning down buildings to get a point across.

Any time that anything turns violent to prove some point, I lose all respect for whatever that cause may be.....

Why is it, 9 times out of 10, that it always results in so many people getting new bags, shoes and tv's

This kak is just the media trying to squeeze the USA into voting for Biden because he is China-friendly and that's where much of their money comes from. From Holywood to CNN and Apple...they need China.

Unfortunately, it has backfired like a mofo.

Suddenly after the Republican convention, the polls are showing that Trump is in a way better position than he was against Hilary at the same stage in 2016...and now CNN are suddenly condemning the violence and claiming that blacks want/need more police not less and that the violence is unnecessary

The joke is on them because it's becoming ever more obvious that Trump will walk this election.

I've got my memes ready for Sharkie when that happens.

LOL

I saw the one clip recently where the CNN anchorman was taken completely apart by one of his guests...... for openly and blatantly lying about Trump's handing of certain issues during this pandemic....

It was so painful to watch, it was bloody hilarious... that anchor had no idea what to do, or where to look..... his guest kept on repeating the facts and saying.... why would you even say that?

These media folks are being paid large amounts of money to continue with the falsehoods and blatant lies.

They are on the take big time.

Follow the money and it will all trace back to one source...........DEMORATS.
