I am providing this information for South Africans living abroad.
For the first time since 1994 in any lection in SA the ANC dropped below 50% of the vote in SA - they are at 45% and that caused havoc in governance of Municipalities - they have the same nightmare as the Democrats has in the USA - losing support to all and sundry. The Democratic Alliance also lost votes in some areas - but gain some in others - an example being the Heesequa Municipality - Riversdale where I live - where there used to be a coalition between the DA and the Freedom Front - but the DA now has 10 members - the ANC 5 and the Freedom Front 1.
But Riversdale is small - so lets look at the major cities
:Johannesburg
In 2016 the ANC did badly in the biggest city in SA - and a coalition was formed with the DA leader in the Council being Mashaba. He left the DA in 2019 and took some Black votes with him when he formed a party. However, the ANC gained some votes from the DA as well - but not enough to gain a majority in the Council. Yesterday they had to elect a new Mayor and and Speaker in the Council and a Dr Phalatse of the Democratic Alliance won by 144 votes over the ANC candidate's 121
Seems a much stronger anti-ANC coalition this year than the case was in 2016
Cape Town
With 57% of the vote in the city the Democratic Alliance formed the city Executive on its own.
Durban
The ANC support also dropped below the 50% mark and approach the IFP to support a coalition government. However, when they insisted that the present Mayor remained in charge - a rather scurvy one by the name of Kaunda - Th IFP voted against him and there will have to be further negotiations in a desperate effort to elect an executive Mayor for Durban.
Still up in the air - but the hold of having a strong Council majority is broken.
Pretpria
The DA was the majority Party in the council in 2016 - but this time the Freedom Front took enough votes from them to get the ANC to get the majority vote - but only 38^ of the votes casted. The fact is that the DA this time around formed a stronger coalition than was the case in 2016.
Port Elizabeth
The ANC managed to get a Mayor elected by 1 vote in Council - gaining the support of some coalition parties. Totally unstable situation
Ekurhuleni Metro (East Rand)
Surprisingly the DA managed to get their candidate elected as Mayor through coalition of parties
So of the 6 major metropolitan areas in SA -
* The Democratic Alliance are now in control of 4;
* and the ANC of 1, with
* 1 still up in the air.
A DA led coalition has also taken over the reigns in Mogale City in Gauteng province. If this results are repeated in the General Election in 2023 the ANC will just get 180 seats in the National Assembly - with the combined opposition having 220 seats.
The ANC retained Dueban and KwaDukuza - but lost Richards Bay.
