surely comes into question now that we know that the gunman was in possession of 2 semi automatic rfles amongst other weapons. Could it be that it was easier for him to lay his hands on the weapons in New Zealand rather than Australia and that is why he committed the act in New Zealand?

Illegal arms will always be available ... in every society.

It's not the guns that are the problem ... it's the mad men who use them ...

In this mad world of ours, where Muslims and other mad men murder the innocent, stricter regulation should be implemented.

Any country who thinks it's not a target of the Muslim and other mad men need their heads read.

This is the world we live in today.

Denny you're spot on ...... it took Australia 12 days after the Port Arthur massacre to outlaw those weapons.

I know....tx Blobbie.

Hell, you'd have to be dumb not to notice that the weapon of choice for mass murderers are semi automatic weapons. It's that simple. Don't allow them legal access to it, again, that's how simple it is.

There ought to be a difference between buying cornflakes online and buying semi automatic weapons online.

My advice would be to ban the sale of semi automatic weapons to the general public.

Blob bok

The not so funny thing is that we've all had a hearty debate about the same thing when the USA suffered a spate of mass murders. NZ obviously thought itself immune to what's happening in the rest of the world....how sad.

My stance on semi automatic weapons are exctly the same now as it was then.

Howard's gun laws is a lesson to be learnt by the rest of the world.

Completely agree.....no reason for the public to be buying automatic weapons. As a former fisherman who no longer enjoys hurting living things, I'd ban all the guns and leave them in the hands of police. It won't be true in every case....there will always be the case where somebody could use a gun to ward off a thug....but many more lives would be saved vs lost.

The protection of the population can't be left in the hands of the government, if that was the case in SA even more innocent people will be killed. If our farmers didn't have guns as a deterrent,  they all would probably have been killed already.

This is a lawless country, but I suppose NZ is a safe enough place to completely ban guns.

48 people were murdered in NZ  in 2017 ....... sadly probably a similar tally for a week in Cape Town.

What weapons are favoured by the criminals in SA?   AK47 and R1's   automatic army machine guns.   Where do they get that from?   Obviously from the Police

“It's not the guns that are the problem ... it's the mad men who use them ... ” @CC, and then there is of course another little matter. How many guns were used by Muslims where they slaughtered hundreds of innocent people? Every time there is a shooting like this, it is the gun laws that are attacked. As you said, “It’s the mad men that use them..”. Some mad men use guns, others use vans, lorries, knives, bombs, suicide vests, etc, etc. All mad men..... and women. BTW. I’m not talking about mass killings in Africa, since that is another matter all on its own. In Africa the preferred tool is probably the AK47. In general, may I ask again, how many Muslim governments and political leaders from Muslim countries have condemned attacks by Muslims in the last few years?

Denny, Without using Google, or Yahoo, or whatever search engine you want to use, could you explain to us: a. A brought outline of AUS gun laws. b. How they came about. c. How were they implemented following the 1996 shootings? d. How many guns are there in AUS post the 1996 shootings compared to pre the 1996 shootings.
