There are always propaganda in situations like happened in Ukraine and even though Russia broke all reasonable rules by attacking there are circumstances hidden from the rest of the world that is problematic for Russia.
* Due to the fact that the Russian Communist leadership did not trust the Ukrainians after what happened in World War 2 they redrew the border of the then Soviet Republic of Ukraine to have a majority Russian population. This artificial "state" remained in place until 2014 - when a revolution sponsored by the USA and EU countries caused he collapse of the pro-Russian regime in the Ukraine. The result was a civil war between the Russian majority population in certain Eastern Ukraine and the Crimea where Ukrainians made up only about 5% of the total population took over parts of the country and Crimea after a referendum in which 82% of the population voted to be incorporated in Russia.
* A ceasefire followed in 2015 and a major part of Eastern Ukraine and that include the Crimea was no longer administered by the Government of Ukraine. When elections were held the Eastern Ukraine never voter for the Kjif Parliament and the result was that the majority Parliament was controlled by the now Ukraine majority population.
* The Ukraine Government was encouraged by the USA and EU to get control of the whole country back and in recent months there were breaches by both side of the Minsk ceasefire agreement. There were still Russian speaking members of the Parliament and their leader of the Opposition was arrested weeks before the actual invasion - but never charged with any offense.
* The arrest was apparently the result of an attempt by the Ukraine Parliament to ban teaching Russian in Ukraine schools. There were other minority languages in Ukraine that was also on the banned list.
* Another problem that was headlined in the past week was the fact that the US Defense Department was funding biolabs in Ukraine and that for the Russians were a red line for the Russian Government. There was an apparent effort by the western media to cover up this problem.
There should have been a where a wide range of options could be negotiated that could have solved the problems for both sides. Re one option would have been to reform Ukraine into a federal for of Government - where the majority Russian speaking area would form a Federal State as part of a Ukraine Federal State, with the Central Government has limited powers when it come to State Governing. Another option would have been to undo the foolish Communist 1953 border change and give the people of the majority Russian speaking population areas to vote under Independent International Control whether they want to remain part of Ukraine or become part of Russia.
The other demands of Russia was that Ukraine should be a neutral State and not part of the NATO set-up, as well as the closing of the biolabs in Ukraine.
There were no real negotiation on the Part of especially the USA to deal with the issues at all and the BRICS countries knows that as well - these countries represent about 42% of the present world population and when various allies of individual BRICS countries are taken into account that figure represents more than 50% of the world population. The majority BRICS countries allow for democratic Governance and opposition parties are allowed to operate - only China is a one party dictatorship.
The story the media spread is that Russia is a communist dictatorship - it is not so. In recent elections the All Russia Party won about 60% of the vote and the rest went to opposition parties. So although the vast area of the country making up one-sixth of the world landed area makes it difficult for opposition parties to operate nationally and most depends on local areas of influence.
As to Ukraine attack the Russian forces has not moved outside of the majority Russian speaking areas and long distance rocket and air attacks target a wider target area.
I think the present problems in Ukraine will only be solved by negotiation and that should be taking into account the problems of both sides.
