Snowing quite heavily in Jo'burg today. Started off with a few flakes and now it's proper snow.

90 more days of that and it would lose it’s allure….lessons from a Chicago winter.

In my younger years in and around the Rand some snow was regular aroun d this time of year.

But mozart has summed it up well in his posting.

becs, to answer your question, the last time it snowed in Johannesburg was in June 2007 and before that was in September 1981.

Think there was a tiny bit of snow in 2012 as well but that was literally just a few flakes, not proper snow like we had today.

I missed the snow in 1981. I was doing my national service and was stuck up on the border walking patrols around a little place called Oshigambo.

Anyone saying snow is a fairly regular occurrence in Jo'burg is either stupid, a liar or very, very old. In fArt's case, it's probably all three . . . and he's probably on his 3rd or 4th triple scotch as well.

becs, we were dressed for it. We don't get a lot of snow but we do have a few very cold weeks in the middle of winter and we had plenty warning . . . not for the snow but for the cold. The snow was a surprise.
Generally the Highveld winters are very mild outside of those cold few weeks. It's nearly always sunny and we braai a lot outdoors in winter. About as warm as a Scottish summer I would say, having recently come back from the UK myself . . . although it was blazing hot in the UK for the first 10 days of June.
I found it incredible that you Brits spend so much time in the sun when you get the rare chance. Whether I was walking around in London, Bristol, Wales, Chester, Lancaster, Morecambe Cardenden, Aberdeen or Edinburgh, wherever I saw parks they were full of Poms suntanning . . . but what really got me, was whenever I wanted to sit outside and have a coffee or a beer, they'd moved all the chairs and tables out of the shade and into the sun. As an avid shade seeker, I didn't cope too well. Oh, and have you people not heard of suntan lotion? I mean, really . . . some of the lobster-red Poms I saw getting sloshed outside while burning themselves to various shades of scarlet . . . do you Brits get so little sun that you've forgotten how sore and unpleasant sunburn is?

Ha ha ha ! I’m a pale Englishwoman so I stay in the shade, we’re not all crazy and lobster red in the sunshine.

But you’re right, as soon as that sun comes out, the pale skin is on show.

We do have quite a lot of sunshine here and you’ve witnessed the pretty warm weather we had a few weeks ago so you can vouch for us that we’re not always cold and rainy.

Glad you have some warm clothes. It’s a bit of a shock when the weather turns out to be a little different than expected !

I have been told from multiple people that the 25 degrees that you get in the UK is totally different to the 25 degrees that you get here in SA....

They say that the 25 degrees in the UK is just so much more hot, humid and uncomfortable

In Cape Town, 25 degrees is a cool summer's day.

Johannesburg has many faults but weather isn't one of them.

It is bloody cold in the Southern Cape as well.    There was snow on the Swartberg mountains as well and this morning it was 4 degrees Celsius - the coldest winter we have had for many years.

In a normal year the rainfull in the area is 406 mm  - this year in the period January to June had over 300 mm.   As a result the weather was cooler with only about 8 days being over 30 degrees Celsius in the whole period from January to June.

Woodburning in the indoor fire place and braai facilities are good for heating up rooms - heaters ae and aircondtioners are very expensive since electricity prices ae impossibly high.

Too much CO2 is obviously causing this cold weather.

Didn't the UK have a big freeze last year. It used to be called winter until people got educated about CO2.

Gotta stop CO2 emmisions oaks. Too many people exhaling is the real problem! Cut food production as well. It's all in a good cause after all.

Enjoy the winter oaks. Obese oaks like Rooitwit who prefer the shade should love winter.

Yep, our weather seems more uncomfortable because of the humidity; my Australian relatives can vouch for that.

We regularly have weather over 30 degrees anyway and last year it was over 40 which was very trying.

Wrong once again Rooiarse, our Wartime General and ANC hero.

Old I might be in your eyes.

Third or fourth double scotch....wrong.

In the early 1960 I think you were still in "---sbag" while I walked through snow to college.

No wonder the Nats surrendered the country with you in the muilitary and on our border patrolling the outhouse.

Thank goodness they found a suitable role for you.

Some "slap gat"  HERO you turned out to be.
