And you are right I have done absolutely nothing for the poor Blacks of SA considering I have never set foot in SA or been within 10,000km of the place. I have however done plenty to lift white South Africans out of poverty by letting one marry (way above his station mind you) my daughter.

I had dinner at Pat Poovalingum's house where the other two guests were Paton and his wife. Pat at one stage was linked to the Liberal Party of which Paton was an honored member. Most enjoyable discussion.
Another person I had a long discussion with was Rowleey Arenstein - a grandnephew of Marx. He was the person with the longest Housing ban under the National Party and was a committed Communist. When I asked Him about the USSR Communist dictatorship he said that the Communist Party in Russia was not true Communists - but a cruel dictatorship. He also reminded me that many later members of the Cabinet and National Party leaders were in their youth members of the Communist Party. Some elements of National party Policies were based on the Communist Manifesto. I know Braam Fischer - whose father was Pime Minister of the Free State - was one of those who remained a Communist, but Sand Du Plessis - Administator of the Free State - was another who joined the National Party - as well as the later Minister Schoeman. There also were other people who through the Labour Party supported Socialist Policies - who became supporters of the Nazi's - another offshoot of Socialism - eg Vorster.
The people involved in the bloody Johannesburg uprising in 1921 were mostly Afrikaaans speaking workers with links to the Labour Party - whose le adership had some Communists as well. That linkage remained when the National Party and the Labour Party formed a coalition Government in 1924.
The Afrikaans leadership in the country got so many things wrong….all stemming from the huge setback of the Boer War. From that point on they became unhinged and pursued policies that were never going to survive. In some ways they remind me of the Republicans….in their own councils these aberrant ideas were strongly supported and wiser voices drowned out as traitorous.
Then finally there is a complete capitulation to the worst case scenarios that would always have been available with a reasonable approach.
