The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol has already exposed extensive evidence of a plot by Donald Trump and his co-conspirators to overturn the 2020 presidential election result. But yesterday’s evidence by Cassidy Hutchinson, the former senior aide to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, has confirmed his treachery and violent intent.

Hutchinson’s evidence shows that Trump was aware of how heavily armed many of the attendees of his rally and planned march on the Capitol building were on January 6 — “I don’t fucking care that they have weapons,” he said — and that he intended all along to lead them in the march until prevented by his own driver (whom, Hutchinson claimed to have heard was physically attacked by Trump). She also says her boss, Meadows, said that Trump believed protesters were right to call for the hanging of then vice-president Pence for refusing to overturn the result on January 6.

Trump’s crimes go beyond attempting to subvert the election outcome and now extend to inciting an armed mob to march on the Capitol to physically prevent the confirmation of the outcome — a mob he intended to lead himself, and whose murderous intent he thought was appropriate.

But despite claims that Trump and his circle are shocked at Hutchinson’s testimony — he is now trying to downplay her role, despite her occupying a key position in the functioning of his inner sanctum — will this confirmation of Trump’s unhinged nature and enthusiasm for an armed mob dent his popular support or political support within the Republican Party?

If you’re a Trump supporter at this point, it’s unlikely any revelation about him will shift your allegiance. For many of his fans, the image of him trying to wrest the steering wheel of his limousine in order to drive it to lead the march is exactly the one they already have of him — a man determined to break any rule necessary to take charge. It is the very transgressive nature of Trump’s actions that, far from alienating his supporters, bind them ever more closely to him — they serve as a demonstration of his commitment to deliver for them, no matter what the cost, even if he tramples on democracy and the rule of law, and costs people their lives.

I think it was LBC radio host James O'Brien over in the UK that coined the phrase the footballification of politics.

Basically you pick a team, and you support them no matter what. You might start out as someone with moderate views, but your willing to put up with the more extreme people in the party you support because its your party. Gradually as you see the extremes of the party become more and more the norm, you start finding yourself justifying those extremes as you can't not support the party and you just keep going down the rabbit hole. No matter how bad it gets you tell yourself "ah its bad but sure the other lot would be worse!", after all the extreme elements of my party tell me that. But really what it comes down to is peoples inability to admit their wrong, that is far worse to them than the party they support driving their country into oblivion and them along with it. Face saving no matter what.

Thanks for proving my point. The extreme elements of your side tell you that Biden is responsible for all the worlds turmoil, like he controls the entire planet and you can dismiss all of 4 years of Trumps insane dumb fuckery with that Orange Man bad joke, so you never have to actually think about the argument the opposing side is making. Just dismiss or represent them.

Trump is going to jail.

The key player is Liz Cheney who is one tough cookie.

So Trump thought the capital mob armed with a few concealed weapons were a force formidable enough to take over the country….you can’t make this stuff up.

In the end he was very ill advised, but he was a president whose whole term in office was poisoned by a lie, which the believers of that lie still won’t set aside.

Trump believes the election was stolen….the entire media and fools chorus on here believe he colluded with Russia.  I can’t see much difference except those who believe the Russia nonsense have never been held to account.

Then Joe Biden can say the exact thing if he loses the next election. He "thought" he actually won.
His Alzheimer's caused him to forget that he actually lost, which means he is still the president 10 years later.

Or Camilla Harris could say she has the authority to choose the next president at the ceremonial transfer of power on the next Jan 6th.

60 cases raised by Trump were thrown out of court, many by conservative judges. No reasonable person would actually think they won the election if their own appointed people are telling him he lost.

It is all a big con. He knows he lost, he is just pretending and saying he believes he won. The insanity plea. Everyone knows that Trump knows he lost

Trump has always gone with his instincts instead of staffer advice… ignoring that advice is why we had a vaccine a year earlier and why the economy did so well under his leadership. That self confidence is a strength and a weakness.

The whole January the 6th debacle was a huge mistake…not designed to actually create a coup, that’s media nonsense. It was designed to put some teeth into the judicial challenges…to provide images that were similar to the Left’s riots in Washington which unsettled many and drove them to avoid confrontation.

But I bet it’s the thing he regrets most, sometimes very succesful people drown in their own success. Is there some stupid behaviour here….yes. Enough so that Trump is not a viable 2024 candidate. Is this a great criminal conspiracy….the media wishes that were true.

The staffers who are trying to feather their own nests are no different from the political types who emerged with great revelations during the impeachment hearings…and had no effect.

I disagree and see things the way the Jan 6th committee represents what is happening-  that the coup started long before the capitol riot.

Trump was making allegations about election fraud more than 6 months before the election even happened.

He always planned to say it was cheating if he lost. He could turn his mob against law and order by lying and saying he never lost. Totally irresponsible and detrimental to American society (Which many government officials have stated during these trials)

It is a bipartisan committee because the true Republicans agree.
Unlike the Trumplicans who wanted to appoint a dictator for life. That is not American, nor is it Western or Democratic.

Trump was using America's fear of the Great Replacement theory to appoint himself for life, and become the American Putin.

Had Trump stayed in power, I truly believe in the long term his biggest critics would be his supporters of today.

You can appoint presidents for life in banana republics, the US constitution only gives the president 2 terms….with the exception of Roosevelt in WW2.  Trump wanted a second term…

The same expected BS from a pre-determined kangaroo court decision by the Democrats in this case.     The fact is the case will be re-examine on a legal and not political basis once the Republicans take control of the House in November. and they will certainly expose what really happened on  6 January 2021.    By then Cheney will either work permanently for CNN or MSNBC and not be a House member anymore.
