There are at present 24 identified cases of virus carriers in SA, The problem is all the carriers have picked up the virus while visiting EU countries - especially Italy but also from Switzerland - Germany, France and the UK.
That makes for a very difficult decision to be taken by the Government - either ban all visitors from those countries and test every SA returnee for presence of the virus on their point of entry, It can become very difficult because the South African borders is like a sieve,
In the meantime the Guinness Top 14 series has been postponed and the Super Rugby games played in Australia where the virus is apparently rife is to be played as "closed door" events - that is without spectators.
Major international soccer tournaments have all been postponed and rugby will probably ends up in the same category.
Not sure about the two ODI matches in India the Proteas must still play - if they do occur they will provably be "closed door" games. The IPL is also in jeopardy. I think that the latter tournament will go ahead in closed door format - but foreign players will find it hard to get entry into India. SA may be allowed in - but players from the UK and even Australia will find it difficult to get visas. Other than returning SA citizens the virus is not in the general population yet, Probably there is no such hope that it stays that way. One would have to see what happens over the next month or so.
Nothing much for Sports lovers to be happy about and the Johannesburg stock market is in free fall. The country is already in a recession because of not only the corona virus - but even the much more serious Eskomvirus. Over the last three sdays we have been without electricity for near to 8 hours per day, . .
