I am here taking a 1-month working holiday in Fuerteventura. Surfing every day, m uch better than the European winter.
Waves are good in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands
I thought the killer whales had chased the great whites out of Capetown,
Kogelbay destroys quite a few boards each year...
Mpower, ever surfed Stilbaai Reef?
Nice point break.
Those were the days!!!
Scurfing on the river was fun too...before wake-boarding was a big thing here.
Nope...never like the surf around Cape Town much and the cold water messed with my ears...gave it up when I grew out of my wetsuit many moons ago. Would love to try it out again in the warmer waters of the Southern Cape some time before I'm too old though .
I never knew this story about David Lilienfield…..so I googled it. So sad and what a horror! The shock to his family is unimaginable.
When I was in the navy I spent 2 months at the General Botha in GB. We got called out one day to look for a missing boy. After a long search he was found at the foot of a cliff….apparently having jumped. And the same scene, the father collapsed when he heard the news. It’s a lonely coast with a lot of tragedies, many a fisherman washed off the rocks.
Oddly in the sixties and early seventies when I did most of my surfing in False Bay I never heard of one shark attack. We saw some big ones but they seemed disinterested.
Have a good one Shark, nothing better good surf and the sea.
Draad and M-Power...great part of the world...brings back many beautiful memories.
Once knew that part well, in fact all that coast from Cape Point to Rooi Els and then futher up to Hermanus to Waenhuiskrans (Arniston). Enjoyed surfing but this was replaced by diving, spearfishing, recreational and kreef and perlemoen.
As for Great Whites had 2 encounters...once off Deep Castle (Castle Rock) in False Bay and another off Arniston where one took the fish off my floatline. The one off Castle Rock was an absolute monster but very fortunately not at all interested just swam around for a brief moment and then slowly moved away.
I believe they become aggressive when there is an absence of fish and seals around...but that is not "set in stone" and others dispute that.
Paddling on boards too can represent sea turtles. Divers in black wet suits can look like seals.
It is interesting to note that some of the worst attacks have been in areas where fish are relatively sparse , ie off Clifton Beach, Fish Hoek and Clovelly.
Also a medical student from Stellenbosch was taken off Millers Point/ Castle Rock whilst spearfishing some years ago...his body was never found.
Parents make peace with shark victim's fate
They are great travellers too...they move from Cape across the oceans to Australian and USA coasts.
Wonderful creatures but to be respected too. Yes it can be scary stuff too but I guess like most creatures will 9 out 10 leave you alone if you don't trigger them off by abnormal reactions.
Just one of the risks one takes if you enjoy the sea. The way I look at it there are far bigger risks driving a car in SA...far bigger.
A very interesting and good read on GW's
Seb, ever spear fished in Jongensfontein? Apparently conditions are perfect for spear fishing there.
No Draad, never dived there. But Struisbaai...5 Mile Bank and about 35 kls further Arniston.

The Johnny's and Raggies are OKish...Hamm ers quite another...even the small ones will come take a bite!
