Seventy potential coronavirus vaccines are currently in development worldwide, three of which are currently in human trials, according to the World Health Organization.

The furthest-along candidate, an experimental vaccine developed by the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology and the Hong Kong-listed CanSino Biologics, is currently in phase 2, Bloomberg reported.

Two others are also currently being tested in human subjects. Those vaccines are being developed by U.S. drug manufacturers Inovio and Moderna, Bloomberg said, citing a WHO document.

The urgency of the pandemic has the industry rushing to develop vaccinations, which are projected to be available next year at the earliest, significantly sooner than the 10 to 15 years the process of getting a new vaccine to market typically takes.

Moderna was approved by U.S. regulators in March to skip animal trials and proceed directly to humans, while larger companies such as Pfizer and Sanofi have candidates in earlier preclinical stages.

Other projections have been even more optimistic, with Oxford University vaccinology professor Sarah Gilbert telling the Times of London that in a best-case scenario her team could have a vaccine ready by fall 2020.

"I know quite a lot about the Oxford project, and it is really great to see some hope, especially on the front page of the newspapers," British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the Washington Post last week.

The U.S. military, meanwhile, has begun primate trials at Fort Detrick as of early April.

"I think it's important for everyone to keep in mind that this is a process that is going as quickly as it can," added Friedrichs, an Air Force brigadier general who serves as Joint Staff surgeon, told reporters. "We're balancing, again, that risk of how do we make sure any vaccine candidates are safe?"

There are in fact wo issues here that has not been resolved here and those are -

*    medicine to be used for people that as been infected and fell ill as a result of the virus; and

*    vaccines to be used to prevent infection.

It is not surprising to see that China would be in the lead insofar as the vaccine element is concerned.   They caused the start of the pandemic and has been trying to keep the rest of the world in the dark about the virus.   There is a problem too with the Chinese,   They already control the manufacture of antibiotics used world-wide and another problem is that info past out by them  is normally unreliable.   One should be careful - reliance on China in this case would be extremely problematic.

In the meantime medical specialist are forced to use a variety/combinations  of medicines to deal with the disease.   I think as extremely urgent finding a vaccine - so urgent it is to develop specific medicines to treat sick people.   Hope projects for that is also extremely urgent,

Would you rather China didn't throw its weight behind developing a vaccine?

Fair enough if you want to criticize them for the attempted cover and down playing of the virus but it wouldn't be in anyone's interest for the Chinese to just sit there with their arms folded while the rest of the world tried to find vaccines and treatment.

I would scrutinize everything coming from China very carefully...developing a vaccine would be in their own interest...it's not like their aggressive isolation tactics are sustainable...wouldn't like being their Guinea pigs .

So if China announced they were not trying to develop a vaccine would you be happier?

Of course its in China's own interest to develop a vaccine, it would allow them to end the pandemic in their country and get back to normal and if they are the first or one of the first to produce a vaccine and make it available world wide it would go some way to repairing the reputational damage its brought on itself . But frankly if it means lives are saved I don't really care where the vaccine originated from.

Stav

Any country and especially a Communist Dictatorship  should not have virtually total control over medicines used worldwide such as for instance antibiotics at present,  They can cut of production and export of medicines when it fits their political  objectives,

The production of medicines should be dealt with in such a way that a dictatorship cannot us e it to advance their political interests,  As such I have no problem with China being part of a world-wide effort - but a repeat of the antibiotics issue should never recur.
