"ANC State Capture 2.0: DA supplements complaint to Public Protector with new revelations about Paul Mashatile

Issued by Solly Malatsi MP – DA National Spokesperson

12 Jul 2023 in News

On 29 June the DA lodged a complaint with the Public Protector about alleged corrupt activities involving Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

Today we have written to the Public Protector to supplement our initial complaint with new revelations about the Deputy President’s activities.

Our commitment is to ensure transparency, accountability, and the dismantling of ANC State Capture 2.0.

Please find attached a soundbite by Solly Malatsi MP.

In light of recent revelations concerning Deputy President Paul Mashatile, the DA will supplement our initial complaint to the Public Protector, shedding light on how these new details contribute to the emergence of ANC State Capture 2.0. We will request the Public Protector to extend the scope of her investigation to include these latest allegations.

Reports indicate that Deputy President Paul Mashatile is currently residing in a lavish R37 million home, which was purchased by his son-in-law, Nceba Nonkwelo, who allegedly received funding from Gauteng government entities. Furthermore, Mashatile’s son, Thabiso, is listed as a co-purchaser of the property. These circumstances raise alarming questions about potential impropriety and the abuse of public funds to finance the luxury lifestyles of ANC cadres – a carbon copy of State Capture 1.0.

While Mashatile’s spokesperson and son have attempted to provide explanations for the move to this property, it is worth noting that the purchase process was initiated months before alleged threats against Mashatile were made. The coincidental timing of Mashatile’s occupation and the finalisation of the property’s registration at the deeds office raises doubts about the validity of the explanations provided.

In light of these new revelations, the DA believes it is essential to expand the scope of the investigation into Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s activities. We will be requesting that the Office of the Public Protector conducts a comprehensive examination of these troubling connections, potential breaches of the Executive Members Ethics Act, violations of the Constitution, and any other relevant legal provisions.

Our commitment is to ensure transparency, accountability, and the dismantling of ANC State Capture 2.0 before it wreaks further havoc on our society. The people of South Africa deserve to have faith in their elected officials and a government that serves their interests, rather than those of a corrupt few. The DA remains steadfast in our fight against corruption and our unwavering dedication to safeguarding the rights and aspirations of all South Africans."

"CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- A group of armed plainclothes officers assigned to protect South Africa's deputy president was caught on video dragging a man out of a car and then stomping on his head until he lies motionless, sparking outrage and drawing more attention to the country's problems with police brutality.

The officers are part of the police security team protecting South Africa Deputy President Paul Mashatile, his office confirmed on Tuesday. There are no indications that Mashatile was present during the incident. His spokesperson didn't immediately respond to phone calls seeking further comment.

The video of the weekend incident shows the officers, some of them holding rifles, dragging the man across the road on a major highway in Johannesburg and then kicking him and stomping on his head and body. The man appears to be kicked unconscious and lies motionless on his back after the attack. The officers are also seen kicking another man, who holds his hands over his head to protect himself.

The police protection unit is known in South Africa as the “blue light brigade” and has a reputation for using unnecessary force. The unit's officers are often criticized for driving fast down highways and reacting with force if other drivers don’t immediately recognize the small blue lights and sirens in their vehicles and move out of the way."
