what do you like in the big one? I like Crown Towers?
@Rooinek
Dense, it's a great field. One of the best I can remember.
I can't look beyond Rainbow Bridge and Got The Greenlight. They're both great champions of their generation and it will be a great race. Do It Again is definitely a danger at these weights and you can never discount the 3 year olds but I'm sticking with those two. I like She's a Keeper as my roughie.
I actually won on Crown Towers in his last run when he led from the start and only just held on but he's not going to hold off this field on Saturday.
I'm persuaded by the weights, in his last run the front running Crown Towers carried 58.5kg this time he's carrying a feather in 53kg, sure he's up in class and I hear you when you say he won't get away with it but as a 5yr that is a huge advantage. He's going to take some catching. My second choice would be Got The Greenlight.
We're getting a live feed of the whole meeting, the bet will be laid, bring it on I'm exited.
Crown Towers is in-form, well weighted and the short Greyville straight will suit his front-running style. He must have a chance and I'll include him in my trifecta and quartet, but I can't see him troubling the big guns.
As for pedigree, I only really look at the breeding when it comes to 2 year olds and first-timers. Once the horse has some form behind it, breeding is less of a factor for me. I've seen stars bred from modest local sires and I've seen flops bred from champion sires. I always think of a filly who raced here a few years ago called Miss Frankel from Frankel's very first crop. She was at odds on for her first run and couldn't run a place. Same thing in her second run and I think soon after that they gave up and sent her to stud.
Check out the 8th race on the card. It's the Grade 1 Garden Province Stakes and features two outstanding fillies. War of Athena has recently won the Triple Tiara and she's up against Captain's Ransom who has won 6 from 7 including a string of features. It will be like a match race as the two of them dominate the betting with the third favourite in double figures.
I go along with that, I've seen duds that were bought for a million bucks flop but generally the winning percentages favour pedigree.
With so many lightweights in the July, track depending I suspect it's going to be a fast run race, think Do It Again as a 6yr old is lightly handicapped. Remember the oldie, it's a goodie..."weight will stop a train" LOL
Wouldn't be one bit surprised if there's an upset, a case can be made for anyone of 4 or 5 horses to win the race. I'll have a look over the full card later.

So I take it Peeper no longer believes you faked your escape from RSA? Or it’s not as important as gambling on horses.
No offense I’m just trying to understand.
If you're just on this thread to stick your nose into something that's none of your business or to have a tearful whine because Dense and I are having a friendly discussion then you should have a little think about getting a life.
Linebacker to win??? Got what it takes.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1398634566101917701
Always tough to predict how the 3 year olds are going to shape against the older horses but Linebacker hasn't been as dominant as other 3 year olds before him. I certainly don't think he's as good as Got The Greenlight was last year as a 3yo and he could only run second.
I'm wary of the 3yos but I have a feeling this isn't the strongest crop we've seen. Linebacker and Rascallion will be in my trifectas but I'm not giving either a winning chance. There's every chance I'll be wrong but that's my take on it.
And there's another down side, he's carrying the same weight as some of the 5yr olds.
But you know...........
Interesting field...the July's always a rough race to break through the field...I hardly ever back the favourites in handicap races but Linebacker will always be dangerous as he can come from back and win going away. I think it will be a contest between him and the class horse Rainbow Bridge.
Best on pedigree is Crown Towers with Saddlers Wells on both the Sire and Dam side, equally is Do It Again with More Than Ready as the Sire.
That discussion taking place without any resolution of the underlying accusation?
Well that just confirms my opinion of both of you.
Moffie, you need to get out a bit more.
Seriously.
And let's not forget that Do It Again has already been the racing commentator's dream once already and we may hear him shout "he's going to Do It Again" a second time!
No horse has won the Durban July 3 times. Six have won it twice: Campanajo (1897 and 1898), Corriecrian (1907 and 1908), Pamphlet (1918 and 1920), Milesia Pride (1949 and 1950), El Picha (1999 and 2000) and Do It Again (2018 and 2019). Do It Again would make racing history if he does do it yet again . . . and he's found some recent good form . . . and he's the choice of stable jockey Fourie who chose last year's winner Belgarion over him and now elects to ride DIA . . . he's also carrying 2kg less than when he won it in 2019 which puts him ahead of Belgarion and Got The Greenlight . . . and the money is pouring onto him, his odds have been slashed from 15-1 to 8-1 in the last few days.
Don't be surprised if the old stager Does It Again!
I still like the lightly raced 4yo filly She's A Keeper as my roughie. She's currently at 28-1 and for a filly that's won 5 from 6, that's a pretty good price.
I can't separate Got The Greenlight and Rainbow Bridge for 1st and 2nd, I'm going Do It Again for 3rd and She's A Keeper for 4th.
The winner will be decided by the way the race maps, is it going to be a sit and sprint?....I don't think it will be simply because there's too many lightweights. If it does happen then the winner will have to have a great turn of foot. My guess is that the lightweights will crack on the pace from the start which will make it difficult for the top weight, on a good track they might set a new record but a cracking pace will suit a horse with a good cruising speed and turn of foot for the sprint up the straight. I don't know enough about the horses to identify that particular one.
My selection is either Crown Towers or Got The Greenlight. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter.
Just had a look at the betting for the first time and I see the hot favorite is Got The Greenlight(6/4) and Crown Towers is an outsider, well that changes it a bit I'll be hanging with Crown Towers.
I tend to agree to him...Rainbow Bridge...don't think the weight will trouble him too much ...reminds me of one of my late fathers favourite horse when I was a youngster...remember William Penn (a big stallion, not gelded and Hawai's half-brother) who always carried top weight. When a horse carries top weight he's earned it.
A 3yr old, drawn the car park, carrying a feather. Great race.
Waaaaaaaaaaahhahahaha:
KOMMETDIEDING WINS THE 2021 DURBAN JULY
A horse none of our resident experts mention, not one of our pompous predictors even rated this horse worth a comment.
Goodness me, when I said Moffie needed to get a life I didn't quite realise the extent!
My life is fine Peeper….you are the poor mop e who has spent your housekeeping money on another failed bet. Congratulations Loser.
Wehe! Such wisdom in hindsight! Meantime, in foresight, I took out a bit of insurance against the 3yos by taking a quartet with Kommetdieding and Linebacker along with the top 3 older horses Rainbow Bridge, Got The Greenlight and Do It Again that cost me R60 and paid out R960 . . . while the weak coward who made no prediction and took such delight in his message board colleagues losing won a grand total of . . . ummm . . . nothing!
LMAO!
Of course, this is the same ignorant noob trying to get mileage out of the older athletes in the same Tour de France when the 22 year old Tadej Pogacar (the same guy who last year became the second youngest TdF winner in the history of the event) dominated the stage today and pretty much wrapped up the Yellow Jersey with two weeks of racing to go!
Waaaaaaaaahahahahaha!
I know it doesn't seem possible, but Moffie may actually know less about Grand Tour cycling than he does about rugby!
So all that effort and you wind up with nothing.. meanwhile my bets were on Shopify, Pay Pal and Tesla. I won’t spoil your day by telling you how much I made.
Rather tell us how the youngsters aren't shaping in this year's TdF.
LMAO!
So predict able.....it's exactly the way I knew he'd respond, he gets more out of this by having a childish pop. It will now drag on for a decade or more, he really can't help himself.
Enjoyed the discussion otherwise, should do it again when the Melbourne Cup is on, cheers Rooi and Seb.
First Tuesday in November. I'll be here. My favourite Melbourne Cup was the one that the giant mare Empire Rose won.
She was a big girl, I remember her...well, I can't help but have a few memories, it's the race that stops a nation. For a start what about the great Kingston Town with 59kgs on his back running second to Gurners Lane(53kg). The jockey Malcolm Johnston and trainer then parted company after a long and healthy partnership. I'll be going down to watch the race on course, that's if Covid doesn't raise it's ugly head.
And Flemington such a beautiful racecourse.
Yes it is but it's the atmosphere Rooi.....it's something special. The one and only time I was there I sat around a table with total strangers in a marquee but you couldn't tell we were strangers. Tell you a funny story about the MC one day.
‘So predictable I knew how he’d respond’….gosh….so you also knew not one of you fools was going to even mention the winner as a candidate?
As for not helping myself I’d be careful if I was you….keep a civil tongue in your head is my advice.
Still predictable....." a civil tongue if I was you".....oh I know, there's those threats again, that's what's it's all about. What did you say...."I have enough evidence to destroy new alliances"
Well, I have news for you, no-one blackmails me, you've been looking for a reason to expose 5-6 year old personal mail, go ahead show your "class"......two can tango.
YAWN
No-one blackmails you. I can remember when in string after string I was defending you against innuendo. But I have pretty much come to the conclusion you are a complete fake, and Peeper was probably right in the first place.
You threatened to destroy any new alliances based on my personal emails, and in your above post you warn me to keep a civil tongue or else. That's where you were coming from all along. That is blackmail. Why the build up, It's what you're itching to do isn't it?...kinda makes you a big man huh.? "exposing" a once loyal and true friend huh? Go ahead, show your "class" just don't be so predictable.
I don't care what you think about me, believe what you're want, spare me the agony of listening to what you think about me....read my lips....I don't care. Your opinion of me counts for zip. To put it bluntly if you believe I'm fake then that's fine by me. What's not fake is the amount of hate in you, you're a bitter bored and hateful wee man. And oh, I'll speak to anyone on here of my choosing without asking for your approval. I'm not one of your Suck-ups and I know you love control.
Buy hey, I only have myself to blame, for more than two decades I believed and trusted a friend who to my horror I've discovered to be a pretender.
Emotional twaddle….when did I threaten to destroy alliances? But it is kind of stunning to see you doing exactly what you accused other posters of, with regard to Peeper. You were positively apoplectic about others befriending the tit.
As for the ‘friendship’ it only existed as long as I was supporting your victimhood, and your racist view of the world. The moment I said Trump was doing some good things is the moment it ended.
That’s one thing, but sucking up to the guy who said you escaped RSA because you were at risk from the ANC is pretty special.
If I thought it had any benefit I'd dig out the post where you said "I have the evidence to destroy any new alliances" then I would summon the energy and dig it out. I really couldn't be bothered. In all the years I've known you, you would never apoligize or admit to being wrong.
Find and audience who cares about what you think of me, you have a few Suck-ups who would be interested, if you had any sincerity in resolving anything you could have emailed me but for obvious reasons you want to play this out on an open forum. Further proof that our "friendship" meant nothing to you. As for our "friendship" ending because of Trump, not quite, it was in decline long before that, the arrival of Trump just better defined you. In actual fact Trump confirmed my opinion of you and it's the only time I thank the obese pig for coming along.
I haven't sucked up-to and I haven't formed an alliance with Rooinek, we've merely had a discussion on something that's of mutual interest, don't let your hate drive your paranoia. I don't hate you, neither do I hate Rooinek, I dislike and disapprove of what he did but unlike you I won't take that grudge with me to my grave. It is what it is, time to move on.
What the hell are you talking about..."That’s one thing, but sucking up to the guy who said you escaped RSA because you were at risk from the ANC is pretty special.
I was at risk from the ANC ?
Really?
Man you are losing it.
On the contrary. You claimed you escaped RSA one step ahead of the security police. Others on here including Peeper claimed you betrayed your ANC colleagues and had to leave because you were at risk from them.
They discounted your experience as pretty much a fantasy.
Who knows where the truth lies. But the fact that you are willing to talk about betting on horses with Peeper suggests nothing he told you bothered you that much.
And thanks for this admission ‘the arrival of Trump just better defined you. It confirmed my opinion of you’. Curious when a year ago you said this:’ It’s just a shame that our friendship ended as abruptly as it did and that over Donald Trump who really means little to me‘.
He means little to you, but enough to ‘define me’.
I guess what really happened is something I said disturbed the chip on your shoulder. You are 10 times the racist that Trump is.
Twaddle.
Your typical spin going round and round scraping at a dated event which has nil impact on you or anyone else.
"you betrayed your ANC colleagues and had to leave because you were at risk from them."
Really, that's saying I had ANC colleagues.....wow, that's news to me.
Instead of saying what Rooinek was supposed to have said why don't you revert to to what you said....oh look forget that, here she goes, lets go with what you want to believe, I'm a liar and a fake.....happy now?
Good.
Now run along , surely you've proven your point, we don't need to suffer another agonizing decades old boring argument as we've experienced with Dave, Mike and Rooinek.
Phheewww glad that's all sorted.
Very ungrateful. I spent years defending you against Peeper’s attacks. All of which counted for nought when I had the insensitivity to support Trump on some issues. Suddenly people you were ‘avoiding’ like Cloudy and Peeper became bosom buddies and I was a ‘deplorable’.
The immaturity of the thought process was stunning.
Still we have made some progress, you accept you are a liar and a fake, now just add the adjective ‘racist’ and we’ll be ‘all sorted’.
