2 Cousins following in their father's tracks. ..

Article in "Die Burger" this morning. Daniel du Plessis (son of Michael) might be starting at 12 for the Stormers this week. He is in the match 23, but in the event od JdJ not recovering from injury in time, he would start at 12, with DdA moving out to 13. This means he would play next to Cousin Jean-Luc against the Cheaters. Can't help to be moved by nostalgic sentiment in this case. GO Doepies!!!!

A talented family ... no doubt ... but they still have a way to go.

 I can remember a CC match at Newlands in the 1980's when both fathers were playing - the one at flyhalf and the other on the wing.  Dan's father Michael went for a try and a Bulls player fell on top of him.  Dan's father took the Bulls player by his hair and crushed his face onto his knee - a dirty trick if ever I saw one.   Those days there were no TV referral or red card offences - otherwise somebody would have got a certain red card.  The one ref was moving back after awarding a try and the two sideline judges were walking to the posts when it happened and nobody saw it - bar the public.
Carel scored an absolute brilliant try that day. Two excellent players.   Carel used to be at Stellenbosch University for 7 years and never passed a subject - eventually he was told to leave.  His forte obviously was rugby and his second the girls - a notorious philanderer - his interest in his studies was minimal to say the least.  
I met him years later in Kimberley and he had his son - then a little boy of about 8 years or so with him - probably young Jean-Luc.   That meeting took place when WP was playing Griquas and it was the first time I saw Jean de Villiers playing in life.
         

 Mike, Stellenbosch won't wait 7 years to kick out a player failing everything, regardless of rugby talent. One of my friends played for "Victoriane" with Carel and Michael. They all stayed in the same house. My friend's father played wing and FB for WP and the Lions. Before my time, maybe you can recall him, Lionel Jonck. He must be just a bit older than you Mike.

Cannot remember Lionel Jonck.   A friend of Crael told m years later the reason for Crel's departure from Stellenbosch to play for the Transvaal.   he was protected by Dr Craven who was more interested in the rugby played by students than their cademic achievements.
     

 He and Michael left for Tvl because they were offered jobs with huge paychecks. Doc pulled strings and I think they returned to WP in 1989 and we drew the CC final with the Bulls that year. 

Ja I remember Michael and Carel in my days in Cape...really good standout players...I knew Peter Whipp also quiet well...he went out with an ex girlfriend of mine...nice chaps these old WP players.
